Dis-United Kingdom Multiculturalism isn't working.

London CONDESCENDING SUPERIORITY is a common British attitude towards the French, whose Gallic bureaucracy, artistic pretensions, and recent military record all serve as targets of ridicule. Now the recent wave of rioting across France, largely perpetrated by Muslim youths, has offered new scope to this smugness. Since the conflict began, the British media have been full of sneers about racial problems in French society, which supposedly has been far less successful than Britain in integrating migrant communities.
But this complacency could hardly be less justified. As an Irish-born writer who lives in both France and the United Kingdom, I believe that the British approach to race relations has been disastrous, fostering disunity, tension, and ethnic strife on a much greater scale than anything that has occurred in France. While cars have been torched in large numbers in French cities, Britain has experienced murderous terrorist outrages committed by Muslim men who were born and bred in England. Thankfully, there was only one fatality in the French disturbances. In the London bombings in July, 52 people were killed and over 700 injured.
Nor has Britain been free of serious race riots. Just before the trouble began in Paris, there were several nights of street fighting between Asian and African-Caribbean gangs in Birmingham, England's second largest city. Two people were killed. And this incident followed years of racial unrest in decaying industrial towns in the north of England, such as Burnley and Bradford, where there are large, radicalized Muslim populations, though the level of disorder is always downplayed by the political establishment and media, anxious not to undermine carefully manufactured images of multiethnic harmony.
In truth, Britain is now a deeply divided land, where suspicion, intolerance, and aggression cast their shadow over urban areas. Only the other day, the government revealed that, in the last twelve months, the number of prosecutions for racial hate crimes had risen by 30 percent. In a courageous recent speech, Trevor Phillips, a black broadcaster who now serves as the chairman of Britain's Commission for Racial Equality, warned that the country is "sleepwalking towards segregation," with society ever more fragmented by ethnicity and religion. Using remarkably frank language, Phillips added that parts of some cities will soon be "black holes into which no one goes without fear."
This sorry situation has been created by a deliberate act of public policy. For the last three decades, in response to waves of mass immigration, the civic institutions of Britain have eagerly implemented the ideology of multiculturalism. Instead of promoting a cohesive British identity, they have encouraged immigrant communities to cling to the customs, traditions, and language of their countries of origin. The emphasis is on upholding ethnic and cultural differences rather than achieving assimilation. This is in stark contrast to France, which has taken a color-blind approach to immigration, with newcomers expected to adapt to the culture of the host nation. The recently imposed ban on Muslim girls' wearing the hijab or headscarf in schools is a classic example of the French model.
Britain has moved in exactly the opposite direction. Soon after the French hijab ban was implemented, a British Muslim teenager brought a successful legal action to win the right to wear in school full Islamic dress from head to toe. She was represented in her court case by Cherie Blair, the barrister wife of the prime minister. And Mrs. Blair's action was typical of the spirit of the Labour-led British ruling class, which has elevated dogmatic multiculturalism into a principle of governance.
Racial segregation is woven into the fabric of British public services. Indeed, under the latest race relations legislation, all public authorities have a statutory duty to promote cultural diversity. So inner city local councils and hospitals in urban areas now print all their public documentation in ethnic minority languages, including Kosovan, Hindi, Greek, Swahili, and Turkish, while many provide extensive interpreting services. One doctor who works in east London told me of her outrage at being sent to take a course in Bengali so she could communicate more effectively with her patients.
Bilingualism is common in urban schools, given that almost 12 percent of children have a first language other than English. London is now the most linguistically diverse city in the world, with more than 300 languages spoken by pupils, ranging from Punjabi and Nigerian Yoruba to Polish and Tamil. In addition, the government now provides funds to Muslims to set up their own schools, in which there is a predominantly Islamic ethos, imams are involved in teaching, and Arabic is learned for the study of the Koran. At present there are just five such Muslim state schools, but the government has announced plans to take the number to 150, a move that smacks of appeasement towards Islamic separatism. The police have also been infected with this spirit. In recruitment in London, there is an open bias towards applicants who speak "a community language." And in the Midlands city of Nottingham, the July bombings prompted the chief constable to order his officers to wear green ribbons "to show their solidarity with the Muslim community."
Thanks to multiculturalism, the provision of public housing, the arts, broadcasting, and community grants is now divided on racial lines. The BBC, the main state broadcaster, has its own Asian network providing news and features inside the U.K. in Urdu, Bengali, Punjabi, and Gujarati. There are now more than 140 housing associations in England catering to ethnic minorities; one of them, the Aashyana in Bristol, provides special apartments for Muslims with the toilets facing away from Mecca. More than 10 percent of the bodies funded by the Arts Council, such as theaters and dance companies, describe themselves as black or Asian organizations. "British culture is not a single entity. We should rightly speak of British cultures," says the Arts Council.
Yet the diversity enthusiasts want to celebrate every culture but their own. In the self-flagellating climate of modern Britain, the nation's traditions are increasingly regarded as reactionary and prejudiced. Britishness has "systematic, largely unspoken racial connotations," declared the government's Commission on the Future of Multi-Ethnic Britain. The commission's report, published in 2000, described the United Kingdom as "a community of communities" and called for British history to be "revised, rethought or jettisoned." The official mood of self-loathing, epitomized by the terror of giving offense to any ethnic group, has become even more pervasive in the last five years. In one typical instance, the English inspector of prisons stated that wardens should not wear badges or tie pins with the red cross of St. George, England's national flag, because this could be "misinterpreted as a racist symbol."
Another extreme episode that was much discussed in the media five years ago illustrates how multiculturalism can undermine the management of social services. At Haringey Council in north London in February 2000, an 8-year-old child from Ivory Coast, Victoria Climbie, died after suffering a catalogue of cruelty, beatings, and neglect by her great-aunt, Marie-Thérèse Kouao, who claimed that Victoria was possessed by the devil. Social workers and the police, alerted repeatedly to Victoria's plight, were reluctant to intervene because they did not want to appear culturally insensitive to Kouao's beliefs or methods of discipline. Indeed, the prevailing mood in the Haringey social work office was one of perverted antiracism, where the woefully incompetent casework manager, Carole Baptiste, held meetings in the dark to discuss African witchcraft and spent much of her time talking about oppression of black women. "It is hard to say how mad it was," recalled one black social worker. "There were some black staff members who would not speak to white people. Aggressive racial politics permeated the office."
The English patriot and maverick socialist George Orwell wrote in 1941, "England is perhaps the only great country whose intellectuals are ashamed of their nationality. In left-wing circles, it is always felt that there is something slightly disgraceful in being an Englishman and that it is a duty to snigger at every English institution." More than 60 years later, multiculturalism has provided the ideal vehicle for the left, which now predominates in civic Britain, to exercise its destructive influence. The neurotic official obsession with the politics of racial identity has destroyed any shared sense of national belonging. As the Asian writer Kenan Malik has put it, "The problem is not that ethnic minorities are alienated from a concept of Britishness but that there is today no source of Britishness from which anyone--black or white--can draw inspiration."
Britain is fast replacing nationhood with a hierarchy of victimhood, with different ethnic groups living in conflict, each trumpeting its own sense of grievance. Age-old liberties, like freedom of speech, are disappearing; a play in Birmingham was recently closed down because a mob of Sikhs threatened to destroy the theater, claiming to be offended by the content of the production. Meanwhile, the endless British accommodation of Islamic extremism, in the name of racial tolerance, has allowed terrorism to flourish in our midst. According to one recent survey, 13 percent of British Muslims support home-grown terrorism, a terrifying thought given that there are 1.6 million Muslims in Britain.
Multiculturalism is not the road that France should go down. Bomb-scarred Britain proves that integration is not achieved by exacerbating racial division and institutional self-hatred.

jail for honour killing family

A father who ordered his two sons to carry out the "honour killing" of his daughter's boyfriend after she became pregnant has been jailed for life.
The body of electrical engineering student Arash Ghorbani-Zarin, 19, was found with 46 stab wounds in Oxford on 20 November last year.
Bangladeshi waiter Chomir Ali, 44, must serve a minimum of 20 years in jail.
Sons Mujibar Rahman, 19, and Mamnoor Rahman, 16, were given minimum terms of 16 and 14 years respectively.
'Shame and dishonour'
Mr Justice Gross, at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, said it was a "cold-blooded intentional killing".
He told the three, who were all present in the dock: "Far from vindicating your family's honour you have permanently dishonoured your family with the stain of murder."
During the trial, Oxford Crown Court heard the two sons killed Mr Ghorbani-Zarin due to the "shame and dishonour" brought on the family by his relationship with Manna Begum.
The pair met in 2003 through school friends, who described them as devoted to each other, with Miss Begum becoming pregnant in August 2004.
But Miss Begum's father had planned for her to have an arranged marriage.

Envoy: Bin Laden May Not Be in Control

By PAUL HAVEN

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) - Osama bin Laden may no longer have operational control of his terrorist network, the U.S. ambassador to Pakistan said Monday.
Ryan Crocker said bin Laden cannot communicate with his followers because he likely is hiding in a remote area, Pakistan's Geo Television and state-run PTV reported after the ambassador met with local journalists.
U.S. Embassy spokesman Peter Kovach, who was at the gathering, confirmed the substance of the reports. He said the comments were made at a lunch for senior Pakistani journalists.
Neither station broadcast a tape of the remarks, and Kovach said he had no recording, either.

According to Geo, Crocker also doubted suggestions that bin Laden's deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, had effective control of al-Qaida, saying the fact that he issues occasional video and audio taped statements does not prove anything.
The al-Qaida No. 2 was last heard from on a tape that surfaced Sunday, urging all Muslims to take up arms and saying a refusal to join the fight against Jews and Christians would lead to the defeat of militant Islam.
He said the global Islamic community had "no hope for victory" until all Muslims signed on to the al-Qaida-led jihad. His comments were contained in a 48-minute tape entitled "Impediments to Jihad."

The video portion of the tape was a still photo of a white-turbaned al-Zawahri with English subtitles running under it. The audio appeared to be his voice speaking Arabic.
It was impossible to verify the authenticity of the tape.
Bin Laden and al-Zawahri are believed to be hiding in the mountainous area between Pakistan and Afghanistan, though there has been no hard evidence of their whereabouts for years. (rest of story.)

Terror threat to 'crowded areas'David Leppard

NI_MPU('middle');
SCOTLAND YARD has issued a nationwide alert that Islamist terrorist cells may be plotting a Christmas bombing campaign.
The warning was distributed to police chiefs nine days ago by the Yard’s anti-terrorist branch. It follows a series of operations by police and MI5 aimed at disrupting possible attacks by terrorists linked to Al-Qaeda.
The latest warning was sent to the chief constables of the 51 forces in Britain on December 2. It said there was evidence to suggest that Islamist terrorists were planning to carry out bomb attacks against “crowded areas” such as shopping centres, football grounds and train stations.
Senior officers say the alert is not routine and are to increase patrols and searches of potential suspects.
Whitehall officials say Britain remains on the second highest state of alert, Severe (specific). It was raised from the third highest state, Severe (general) to the highest, Critical, on July 7, the day of the London suicide bombings.
It was due to have been lowered on July 21, but the four failed attacks of that day delayed the decision. It was reduced to Severe (specific) in mid-August. Sir Ian Blair, the Metropolitan police commissioner, revealed two weeks ago that since then police had foiled two further attacks on Britain. Senior police officers have briefed the cabinet that the threat remained high.
Blair said police are preparing for attacks in the next few months. “The sky is dark,” he said. “Intelligence exists to suggest that other groups will attempt to attack Britain in the coming months.”
Terrorists linked to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, head of Al-Qaeda in Iraq, are feared to have established a network in Britain. Some are involved in recruiting young Muslim men to travel to Iraq to fight the coalition. Others are believed to be planning suicide attacks in Britain itself.
Patrick Mercer, the Tory homeland security spokesman, said he was concerned about further attacks against the underground system: “The government needs to explain what further efforts it plans to make the tube safer.”

UK: Police sponsor jihad conference

Yes, you read that right. In "This Shameful Ranting Must Stop" at Current Viewpoint, Carol Gould tells the story. (Thanks to Melanie Phillips.)
Just before going back to the USA after five months in the UK I attended the ‘Global Peace and Unity’ Conference at London’s Excel Centre presented by the new Islam Channel and sponsored by Emirates Airlines, Western Union (hmm??) and the Metropolitan Police.
It was advertised as a diverse event to which non-Muslims were invited and the impression one got from the website was of a celebration of Middle Eastern culture, food, music and children’s activities in a London milieu.
To my utter horror -- and I should have written this report two days ago but my physical and emotional shock have rendered me nearly inert -- it was a seven-hour call to Jihad by a succession of ranting and shouting rabble-rousers.
The eminent barrister Michael Mansfield QC, wearing black and white keffiyah scarf, shouted into the mike about the heinous crimes of the Western coalition countries. The crowd chanted and thundered its appreciation.
The terrifying demagogue George Galloway ascended the podium and exhorted the crowd to stand up for the redemption of the oppressed Muslim world or else the nation had better get ready for ‘rioting in every street in Britain.’.
The ‘slaughter in Palestine and Iraq’ being only part of the equation, Chechnya, Bosnia and Kashmir were also mentioned all day by every speaker including a crazed, chador-clad Yvonne Ridley, who at any moment I expected to self-immolate, such was her fury at the Zionists, the Americans and her fellow Britons. To my utter disbelief, she condemned the British police force as some form of fascist brigade in ‘jackboot Britain.’
To all of these exhortations came cries of ‘Alllahu Akhbar’ from the enormous, simmering crowd of what looked to me like the angriest gathering of young men and women with whom I have ever had the misfortune to be seated in my lifetime. (source.)
Kiss girl's rape by three

THREE Iraqi asylum seekers were jailed for a gang rape yesterday — after a judge told them a girl’s “snog” on dance floor was not “a licence to defile her”.
Judge Michael Heath recommended Sahid Sherwan, 23, Star Ahmad, 33, and Mohedin Amin, 29, be deported after their eight-year sentences.
The 25-year-old victim had a “passionate” kiss with one of them at a nightclub, Lincoln Crown Court was told.
She was then tricked into getting into their car after mistaking it for a taxi and subjected to an “appalling” sex attack.
The judge told the men, from Spalding, Lincs: “The way you behaved was an outrage.
“It was a horrid, terrifying, degrading and humiliating experience.”

Plumber on terror offence charges

A plumber arrested near the M25 last week has been charged with five offences relating to alleged terrorist activities and firearms offences, police said.
Kazi Nurur Rahman, 28, of Newham, east London, is alleged to have had in his possession three Uzi sub-machine guns and 3,000 rounds of ammunition.
He will appear at Bow Street Magistrates Court to answer five charges, two of which are under the Terrorism Act 2000.
Rahman was arrested by armed officers near the M25 South Mimms service station in Hertfordshire last Tuesday. Scotland Yard said the 28-year-old, who is a British citizen, was charged following an investigation by detectives from the Metropolitan Police Anti-Terrorist Branch.
Armed officers from the Metropolitan Police's CO19 firearms unit challenged Rahman as he left a parked car on a minor road near the service station. A number of properties in the Waltham Forest and Newham areas of London were searched following his arrest. The first charge alleged that he possessed a firearm, an Uzi, without holding a current firearm certificate on November 29.
The second charge stated that he possessed the Uzi with intent to endanger life on the same date. Both are offences under the Firearms Act 1968. Part of the second charge claimed that Rahman conspired with others to possess firearms, named as three Uzis and ammunition, with intent to endanger life, an offence under the Criminal Law Act 1977.
The third charge alleged Rahman possessed a prohibited weapon, an Uzi, that is designed to discharge two or three missiles without repeated pressure on the trigger. This is also an offence under section five of the FireArms Act 1968.
The fourth charge, made under section 17 of the Terrorism Act 2000, alleged that Rahman was concerned in an arrangement which made property, namely three Uzi firearms and 3,000 bullets, available to another.
It also alleged that he knew or had reasonable cause to suspect that it will or may be used for the purposes of terrorism. The offence is alleged to have taken place before November 30, 2005.
The final charge, made under section 57 of the Terrorism Act 2000, alleged that Rahman possessed an Uzi in circumstances which may be connected with the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism. (STORY HERE.)

British Muslim group declares new jihad

A Ynetnews investigation has uncovered online recruitment of British Muslims for participation in terror attacks; 'We should give them another magnificent day in history' threatens one man Yaakov Lappin http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3156809,00.html
Teacher's 9/11 boasts

By SIMON HUGHES A TEACHER whose brother was a suicide bomber told pupils after 9/11: “I am on Osama Bin Laden’s team.” Parveen Sharif, 37, asked other schoolkids: “Hands up everybody who has got relations in New York?” She added: “Well they’re dead.” Parveen was acquitted yesterday of sending an email inciting her brother Omar, 27, to carry out a suicide bomb attack. But juries at two trials had NOT been told of her sickening outbursts after it was ruled they might be prejudicial. The first was made to pupils the day after the Twin Towers massacre in 2001, which left 2,819 dead. Bombers ... Parveen's brother Omar, right, and fellow Brit Asif Hanif Children at Somerlea Park Junior School in Alfreton, Derbys, complained that she insisted Bin Laden should not be blamed and said it was wrong for the US to attack Afghanistan. Senior staff protested to the agency which employed her and she was withdrawn that night. Supply teacher Parveen made more pro-Bin Laden remarks to a class of 30 nine and ten-year-olds at Grampian School, Derby, on September 25. Three were so upset their parents complained. The school told Parveen’s agency not to send her again. Sue Penglase, headmistress at the time, recalled: “The comments were totally inappropriate. We did not want this woman back.” http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2005550268,00.html Yesterday Parveen and brother Zahid were also cleared of failing to tell authorities Omar planned a suicide outrage in Israel — the first by British Muslims. Omar — who posed clutching an AK47 rifle with another British bomber — failed to detonate his device in 2003. He killed himself in shame. Jurors failed to reach verdicts last year on Parveen and Zahid, 39, both from Derby. Yesterday, they hugged outside the Old Bailey as they were cleared after a re-trial. The pair said: “We did not know what our brother was going to do. It shocked us.”
muslim 'drink fuelled rampage'

BBC News Three British-born Pakistani men are facing life sentences after being convicted of murdering a white graduate in London while drunk. BBC News Website looks at the case in detail. Three young men get very drunk, shout racist abuse, assault a waiter in a curry house and get involved in a series of brawls, climaxing with an attack on an innocent man who crosses their path. It sounds like a night of violence of the type which blights the name of many city centres. Except that the victim, 30-year-old graduate Christopher Yates, was white, and the killers were all British-born Pakistani men from Muslim families. Binge drinking On Tuesday Imran Maqsood, 21, and his friends Zahid Bashir, 23, and 25-year-old Sajid Zulfiqar were found guilty of murder. Sentenced on Thursday, Judge Martin Stephens QC told them they must serve at least 15 years for the attack. Maqsood, Bashir and Zulfiqar eschewed their parents' religion and culture - although they paid lip service to it - and chose instead to set out on a night of drink fuelled violence that is sadly all too familiar. It was a ferocious attack...In particular his head was stamped on with some force Anthony Leonard QC The Old Bailey heard that on 7 November last year the three men got drunk on beer and brandy in the West End before heading back towards their homes in Ilford, east London. Mr Yates, a data inputter, dropped a female friend off at a bus stop and then took a short cut through the car park of the University of East London in Barking. There he found Zulfiqar, Bashir and Maqsood, who were still drinking. Without provocation they knocked him to the ground and began kicking and stamping on his head. Afterwards one witness said she heard Zulfiqar saying in Urdu: "We killed the white man." Another witness overheard them say: "That will teach the white man for interfering in Paki business." 'Ferocious attack' Mr Yates died of extensive fracturing of the facial bones, caused by multiple kicking and stamping. Anthony Leonard QC, prosecuting, said: "It was a ferocious attack...In particular his head was stamped on with some force...When the assault was over the defendants moved to a nearby road where they damaged several vehicles and set off car alarms as well as threatening householders." They racially abused a black resident and then moved on to a curry house where they assaulted an Asian waiter. While the attack on Mr Yates may have had the hallmarks of racism, judge Martin Stephens said the evidence suggested otherwise. "Between you that morning, you attacked people of all races, white, black and Asian," he said. "These, in my judgment, were random attacks carried out on people who had the misfortune to come across you in your drink-fuelled rampage." Giving evidence, Maqsood said: "We were all drunk and acting like idiots in the City. I had a few fights in the City. I acted like an idiot at the Ali curry house but the bottom line is I didn't hurt Mr Yates." They posed a "cut-throat" defence, all seeking to blame each other for Mr Yates' murder. Secret girlfriend The trial painted a picture of three men whose drinking and womanising was kept secret from their families. The Old Bailey heard Maqsood's parents had no idea he drank alcohol and he even had a secret girlfriend, Sophie Shah. Defence counsel, David Nathan, asked: "Were your parents aware of the relationship you had been having with Sophie Shah?" Maqsood, who was born in Burnley, Lancashire, replied: "No. It's something I wouldn't do [tell them]. In our religion you don't tell your parents. They might get upset." Mr Nathan asked: "Was the relationship you were having something which was approved of in your religion before marriage?" "No," Maqsood replied. Ms Shah broke up with him while he was on remand at Belmarsh prison and she gave evidence at his trial, claiming he had confessed to his involvement in the killing of Mr Yates. Fled to Yorkshire After the killing the men fled to Yorkshire and stayed at a friend's hotel in Pontefract. Comments were made which could be perceived as racist but whether it was racially-motivated is something which only the defendants will know Detective Chief Inspector Tony Boxall Police believe they were planning to flee the country from Manchester Airport, which has daily flights to Pakistan. Mr Leonard said: "All three men were concerned that this would be made out to be a racist incident." The court heard that a hotel porter overheard them discussing the reaction in the Muslim community, which would be outraged because they had been drinking alcohol during Ramadan. Detective Chief Inspector Tony Boxall, who led the inquiry, said the incident was initially treated as a racially motivated attack. But he said: "Although classed as a racial incident there is no direct evidence it was racially motivated. "Comments were made (by the killers) which could be perceived as racist but whether it was racially-motivated is something which only the defendants will know." A fourth man, Junaid Khan, who admitted stealing Mr Yates' mobile phone while he lay on the ground, was sentenced earlier this year.
Story from BBC NEWS:

christian doctor forced out

An eye specialist has accepted undisclosed damages after claiming that he was forced out of his job by Muslim colleagues.

Joseph Erian took the United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust to an employment tribunal, stating that he was made to resign from the ophthalmology department of Pilgrim Hospital, Boston, after staff there discovered that he was a Christian. The tribunal, which started earlier this month, ended when the trust offered an out-of-court settlement and admitted that the problems surrounding Dr Erian’s case “were not his fault”.

Dr Erian pursued his claim privately after the British Medical Association refused to back the case, Jane Jelly, his lawyer, said. He brought his case under the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003, which make it illegal to discriminate against someone on the grounds of their religion or beliefs.
'Muslim' gangs target vulnerable

Violent street gangs are committing crimes in the name of Islam in south London, Muslim leaders have said. They said there was evidence the gangs were targeting vulnerable young men and threatening them with violence if they did not "convert" and join them. Scotland Yard said they were aware of a gang called the Muslim Boys, a number of whom had been arrested for gun and drug offences. Police and Muslim leaders said the gang's beliefs were not legitimate. Young people are receptive to this message because they themselves are empty, they need something to believe in Wanoo Sheshmi From Boyhood to Manhood Foundation Wanoo Sheshmi, of the From Boyhood to Manhood Foundation, which works with young men in south London, said the gangs tried to get those from the most deprived areas to join them. He said: "We know that they (the gangs) are targeting young people, vulnerable young people who are receptive to this message because they themselves are empty, they need something to believe in." Abdul Haq Ad-eye, of the Brixton Mosque, said: "People have been saying that there have been some Muslim youth that have an extremist understanding of Islam, so we are very concerned about that at Brixton Mosque because we have been quite pivotal in warning against extremist understandings of Islam." Det Ch Supt John Coles, head of Operation Trident, which deals with gun crime within the black community, said most of the "hardcore" of the gang had been arrested. A police statement said: "Trident are aware of a number of young black males in South London who call themselves the Muslim Boys, and are involved in gun and drug related offences. "Some of these individuals claim to have converted to Islam, although their beliefs are not recognised by genuine Muslims within the community."
