'Strict Muslim' raped four women at knifepoint to 'punish them for being on the streets at night'

A Muslim man who raped women to 'teach them a lesson' for being on the streets at night was jailed indefinitely today because of the danger he poses to women.

Sunny Islam, 23, who comes from a strict Muslim family, dragged his terrified victims - including a 15-year-old - from the street at knifepoint, bound and assaulted them during a two-month reign of terror.

Police fear that Islam may have attacked many more.

Three of the assaults took place close to his home in Barking, east London, while a fourth occurred in nearby Forest Gate.

Judge Patricia Lees, sentencing him to a minimum of 11 years, said: 'The harm you have done to your victims is incalculable.

'The nature and extent of these offences drives me to the conclusion that you represent an extreme and continuing danger to women, particularly those out at night.'

He was traced through the number plate of his girlfriend's car after he kidnapped and raped the 15-year-old in September 2010.

He grabbed her from behind as she walked home with a friend and bundled her into the car at knifepoint before driving to a secluded spot where he raped her twice despite her claiming she was only 11 years old.

Judge Lees said: 'You told her you were going to "teach her a lesson", and similar things were said to the other women.

'Those words are a chilling indictment of your very troubling attitude towards all of these victims.

'You seem to observe women out at night as not deserving respect or protection.

'I have no doubt that you were out that night looking for a victim, as you were on each of these occasions.'

The teen, who feared she would be murdered, was in court and smiled as her attacker was jailed.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, she said: 'No one will ever understand the flashbacks - they are so real. At night, I lay in my bed and it is like I am there.

'It is like a screen in my mind forcing me to relive that night again and again.

'People will say time will heal, but I think time has helped me accept the truth - that I will never escape what has happened to me.'

After his arrest, Islam's DNA was linked with three other attacks near his home in Barking, prosecutor Sara Lawson told Woolwich Crown Court.

'He treated me like an animal and made me feel worthless. I thought I was going to die'

The judge said on July 8, 2010 he subjected a 20-year-old prostitute to 'his trademark double rape' and then tied her up, repeatedly punched her in the face and stole her wallet.

She said: 'He treated me like an animal and made me feel worthless - I thought I was going to die.'

Six days later, in Forest Gate, he struck again on a 28-year-old when he dragged her into his car and forced her to commit a sex act.

She managed to kick out the back window of his car and escape despite being throttled.

His fourth victim, also attacked in September, did not come forward until police found the 31-year-old's blood in the back of the car along with a knife he used to threaten his victims and plastic ties he bound them with.

She was repeatedly repeatedly punched in the face until she was bleeding and then tied up and raped twice.

Islam, who told the jury he was a practising Muslim, was convicted of seven charges of rape, one of sexual assault and one of kidnap.

Tana Adkin, defending, said: 'The only piece of mitigation is his age. He was 21 at the time of these offences and comes from something of a strict background.'

His mother, in religious dress, sat with her covered head bowed throughout and wept as her son was jailed.

Judge Lees said: 'The fact that you have attacked these women not withstanding your background must represent your own wholly warped personality.'

After the trial, Det Chief Insp John Sandlin, of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command who investigated the offences, said they believed there may be other victims who had not come forward, but Islam has not been charged with any further offences.

Muslim fanatics who called for execution of gays face up to seven years in jail

Muslim extremists who handed out leaflets calling for homosexuals to be hanged, stoned and burned to death were facing up to seven years in prison last night.

The group handed out the material in the street as well as posting it through letterboxes in a hate-filled campaign calling for the execution of gay people who they claimed were at the root of society’s problems.

Ihjaz Ali, Kabir Ahmed and Razwan Javed are the first to be prosecuted under new laws against inciting hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation.

The pamphlet, called The Death Penalty?, showed an image of a mannequin hanging from a noose and quoted Islamic texts that said capital punishment was the only way to rid society of homosexuality

Yesterday as they were found guilty at Derby Crown Court, residents spoke of how the three fundamentalists wanted to transform their small area of Derby into a ‘medieval state’ under Sharia law.

Anyone who dared to question their extreme agenda was branded an ‘M15 agent’ or a ‘sell-out,’ they said.

Last night it emerged that:

Muslim fanatic and hate preacher Anjem Choudary was secretly invited by the group’s ringleader, Ihjaz Ali, for a series of meetings in Derby;

The group had links with the extremist organisation Al-Muhajiroun, which is banned under UK anti-terror laws;
Moderate Muslim leaders who spoke out against the group’s activities were targeted in a hate campaign in which their faces were printed on ‘wanted’ posters;
Police had to be called during local elections because the group’ s supporters were standing guard at polling stations, ordering Muslims not to vote.

During the trial, the court heard how the group’s activities intimidated residents and left gay people frightened to walk on the streets.

The first, entitled ‘Death penalty?’ proclaimed that ‘Allah permits the destruction’ of gay people and that ‘the only question is how it should be carried out’.

The second, entitled ‘Turn or Burn’, featured a burning figure in a blazing lake of fire and warned that the decriminalisation of homosexuality was ‘the root of all problems’.

A third, entitled ‘GAY - God Abhors You’, warned of ‘severe punishment’ for homosexuals.

A fourth leaflet linked to the group, which was never distributed, described homosexuality as a ‘vile, ugly, cancerous disease’. It referred to ‘queer sinners’ and ‘faggots’ and posed the question ‘Gay Today, Paedophile Tomorrow?’

Ali, 42, Ahmed, 28, and Javed, also 28, all of Normanton, Derby were found guilty of distributing threatening written material intending to stir up hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation. They will be sentenced next month.

Two others who distributed the leaflets, Mehboob Hussein, 44, and Umar Javed, 38, also of Normanton, were cleared of inciting hatred.

The offence was created by an amendment to the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act, brought in March 2010.

Stirring up hatred against homosexuals now carries the same penalties as inciting hatred based on race or religion.

During the trial, gay residents told of the impact the leaflet campaign had on their lives.

They gave their evidence from behind screens because they said they were terrified of the group knowing they were gay.

Ben Summerskill, head of the gay rights group Stonewall, said extreme anti-gay propaganda had become a choice tactic for preachers of hate, who knew that other extremist messages – relating to terror or religious hate – would land them in prison.

‘It’s clear that one form of extremism fosters another,’ he said. ‘It’s no surprise there’s a link between violent and extreme homophobia and religious extremism.’

At his trial, ringleader Ihjaz Ali insisted he was just a ‘hard-working, family man’ with traditional Muslim views.

But yesterday a video emerged which shows Ali at a meeting with notorious hate preacher Anjem Choudary.

Ali booked the room in a local community centre on ‘several occasions’ for secret meetings with the notorious fanatic.

Choudary has frequently praised the terrorists who carried out the 9/11 attacks and called for all gays to be stoned to death.

Ali, a taxi driver, had told community centre staff he wanted the room for an ‘Islamic discussion group’. But police were called in when they realised Choudary was attending the meetings.

On the video, taken in 2009, bearded Ali can be seen remonstrating with police officers as they order Choudary out, telling him he is ‘not welcome’ in Derby.

Holding a letter the police have handed him, Ali can be heard saying: ‘You say to me according to this letter…(that I)… support violent extremism.’ The policeman replies: ‘Of course you do.’

Labour councillor Fareed Hussain said the footage of Ali with Choudary was ‘not surprising.’

He said that Ali was ‘openly associated’ with Al-Muhajiroun – a group headed by Choudary and banned under British law because of its suspected links to international terrorism.

Ali, he said, had ‘openly distributed literature’ in the name of Al-Muhajiroun from a stand on the Normanton high street. And he would ‘subject younger Muslims to pressure’ to take part in his fundamentalist campaigns.

‘I think it is extremely likely Ali and his associates are still linked to Al-Muhajiroun,’ the councillor added. ‘I don’t for a minute believe these five who distributed the leaflets were operating in isolation.’

One resident, who did not want to be named for fear of being targeted, said the extremist group led by Ali ‘wanted to turn the clock back to a medieval state’ under Islamic law.

Another, Oweyss Lal, 18, a sales consultant, said: ‘They target teenagers who are not very educated. Anyone who speaks out against them is labelled an MI5 agent or a sell-out.’

Mr Hussein said although they ‘did not represent a majority at all,’ Ali and his accomplices were ‘very aggressive, vocal and intimidating’.

During local elections in 2006, a group of Muslim men gathered at the polling station in Normanton to intimidate voters. ‘They told people that voting was forbidden by Islam and any government is illegitimate unless it is an Islamic caliphate,’ he said.

‘I had to call the police – they were scaring people.’

Mr Hussein said he was then singled out himself in a frightening poster campaign. In the same week the ‘death penalty’ leaflets were distributed, hundreds of ‘wanted’ posters appeared in Derby accusing Mr Hussein and other Muslim community leaders of ‘selling out’ to a western agenda.

‘The alleged crime was encouraging Muslims to be part of wider society,’ he said. ‘I was shocked – the posters were very intimidating.’

One gay resident summed up the atmosphere in the area.

‘It used to be lovely round here,’ he said.

‘Now, because of these people, you don’t feel safe. I don’t have any problems with Muslims. But these lot need to realise we live in England, not some Islamic state.’

One of them earlier explained: "My intention was to do my duty as a Muslim, to inform people of God’s word and to give the message on what God says about homosexuality."

71-Year-Old Imam Leads Violent Attack on Rival Family...

A 71-YEAR-OLD mosque leader and his 67-year-old wife took part in a violent attack on a rival family in massive street brawl, a court heard.

Nadir Khan, president of the New Medina Mosque, and other members of his family, attacked Mohammed Iqbal Khan and his family on August 7, 2009, Bolton Crown Court was told yesterday.

A jury heard that Nadir Khan’s family, referred to as the Marlborough Street group, were armed with baseball bats, cricket bats and a car steering wheel lock.

The 10 defendants are all charged with violent disorder and a variety of other offences, all of which have been denied.

The families attend the same mosque and have a long standing grievance towards each other, the jury was told.

Shahzad Bahadar, known as Razaq, who, the Crown say, was the leader of the Marlborough group, contacted Mohammed Iqbal Khan’s brother, Mazhar, and asked them to come and sort out their differences as Ramadan was near and they could start with a clean slate.

But when they arrived, there were 20 to 25 Asian men in the street armed with weapons and violence broke out.

Peter Barr, prosecuting, said: “It is the Crown’s case that this is a most serious case of a pre-planned ambush, violent disorder.

“Weapons were carried, weapons were used and people were seriously hurt.”

The court heard that victim Munawar Khan suffered a broken hand and had to have a metal rod inserted after being attacked with the steering wheel lock by Razaq.

He was also hit on the head with a baseball bat by Ayaaz Khan, which resulted in a big lump next to his left eye.

Those two defendants then moved on to Mukhtar Khan. Razaq hit him with the lock on his back and shoulder, and Ayaaz Khan hit him across the left eye with the bat. The victim was taken to hospital and had four stitches and was left with black eyes and bruising.

Mohammed Iqbal Khan was attacked by Majid Dad, who had a baseball bat, and Khushleem Arshad, who had a black stick. Both aimed for Mr Khan’s head, but he managed to deflect the blows, said Mr Barr.

Nadir Khan struck him on the head with a baseball bat, the jury was told. Mr Khan fell to the ground and suffered a head wound which required six stitches.

Nadir Khan then attacked Ilyas Khan with a cricket bat and he needed eight stitches, the prosecution say.

Tahir Iqbal was struck with a bat by Ayaaz Khan, but managed to run away to a car park.

There, he was attacked by another man and, as he tried to get up, Dad allegedly threw a large concrete slab at him.

Mr Iqbal thought he was going to be killed, but he managed to turn away and the slab hit him on the back of the head, causing cuts. Inayat Khan, Nadir Khan’s wife, is alleged to have attacked Ilyas Khan’s sister as she tried to calm the situation.

A talk on sharia and human rights by NSS Council Member Anne Marie Waters' at Queen Mary University of London was cancelled at the last moment because of an Islamist who made serious threats against everyone there.

Ms Waters was due to give a talk on behalf of the One Law for All campaign on 16 January but before it started, a man entered the lecture theatre, stood at the front with a camera and filmed the audience. He then said that he knew who everyone was, where they lived and if he heard anything negative about the Prophet, he would track them down.

The man also filmed students in the foyer and threatened to murder them and their families. On leaving the building, he joined a large group of men, apparently there to support him. Students were told by security to stay in the lecture theatre for their own safety.

The President of Queen Mary's Atheism, Secularism and Humanism Society, who organised the event said: "This event was supposed to be an opportunity for people of different religions and perspectives to debate, at a university that is supposed to be a beacon of free speech and debate.

"Only two complaints had been made to the Union prior to the event, and the majority of the Muslim students at the event were incredibly supportive of it going ahead. These threats were an aggressive assault on freedom of speech and the fact that they led to the cancellation of our talk was severely disappointing for all of the religious and non-religious students in the room who wanted to engage in debate."

The police were contacted about the incident.

Muslim Rapes Three Girls at One Time...

A SEX fiend from East Lancashire who attacked and raped three girls has been jailed for 14 years.

Shofik Ali, 22, drove them to a house where he forced them into a room, took their mobile phones and raped them.

Ali has been branded an ‘animal’ by a councillor for putting the girls through such an extended ordeal.

At one point he threatened to burn down the house unless one of the trio agreed to his demands during their ordeal, Bolton Crown Court was told.

Ali, of Wells Street, Haslingden, had been drinking with the girls while they were driven around East Lancashire, the court heard.

But later Ali turned nasty and dragged one girl into the bedroom of a house in Rochdale, jamming a bed against the door and demanding sex.

Before they could flee Ali raped all three, punching one girl on the nose so she would co-operate.

Ali denied four offences of rape and assault by penetration.

He was convicted of the four rapes and found not guilty of the assault.

Jailing him Judge Timothy Clayson also ordered him to sign the sex offenders’ register for life.

Speaking after the case, Coun David Stansfield, who represents Haslingden’s Worsley ward, where Ali lives, said: “He’s worse than an animal.

“The people of Haslingden will be pleased that this kind of offender is off our streets. If it was left to me he would have got 20 years.”

Prosecutor Peter Barr said the defendant and the girls, who were all younger than Ali, were driven around East Lancashire, buying alcohol and drinking it before ending up at a house in Rochdale.

An argument developed later, Ali began smashing up furniture and police were called.

Police officers took him away from the house and dropped him off at Rochdale bus station, so he could travel home to Haslingden.

But he went back to the same house and snatched mobile phones from the three girls, before grabbing one by the hair and pushing her towards a bedroom, the girl began screaming and crying, as Ali pushed the bed against the door and raped her.

Her friends then managed to force entry into the room.

While trapped in the bedroom all four eventually fell asleep but a second girl woke up when Ali began groping her, the court heard.

Ali forced himself on the girl and raped her before moving on to target the third girl. He also had sex with her against her will.

He then demanded sex from the first girl - threatening to keep her prisoner and burn down the flat if she failed to comply, the court heard.

The girls all eventually fled from the house and reported their ordeal to police, who arrested Ali the following day.

Ali has previously served a prison sentence when he was jailed for 18 months for conspiracy to defraud in December 2009 after he helped to launch a £96,000 eBay scam.

Muslim jailed for holding ex-wife prisoner on the toilet after blasting her western knickers as SATAN

A devout Muslim held his ex-wife prisoner on the toilet for an hour and physically assaulted her as punishment for wearing Western clothes.

Khalique Miah has been jailed for 18 months for the attack on Zahanara Begum.

She was on the loo when her former husband burst in dressed in black, wielding a hammer and referring to her underwear as 'Satan'.

Miah, 35, covered her mouth with a gloved hand to stop her screaming, punched her in the chest and stomach then climbed on top of her, holding her in place, Snaresbrook Crown Court heard.

He started haranguing her about her plucked eyebrows, shaved legs and highlighted hair, telling her she should not wear Western clothes and calling her knickers 'Satan'.

The couple’s three-year-old daughter woke up and started crying, but Miah refused to let Mrs Begum go and comfort her.

After an hour she begged for her freedom and he relented, telling her to get in the bath.

He then took her into the living room, where the father-of-two said her hair would have to go.

She agreed, not realising what he meant until he went into the kitchen, fetched a pair of scissors and started snipping it off into a carrier bag.

By this point it was nearly 3am, but Mrs Begum decided to wake the couple’s children in the hope their presence would stop Miah hurting her.

The defendant pocketed his ex-wife’s mobile phone, cut her landline and refused to let her leave the flat until 10am the next day, when she persuaded him she wanted to give the marriage another go.

He agreed to phone her family and when they arrived at the address in Whitechapel, East London, Mrs Begum asked them to call the police.

Miah admitted false imprisonment and assault causing actual bodily harm.

Passing sentence, Judge Simon Wilkinson said the victim had been through a 'terrifying ordeal' at the hands of her former husband.

He said: 'At 11pm, you arrived at her address unannounced and uninvited. You were dressed in black and carrying a hammer in the waistband of your trousers.

'You surprised her when she was sitting on the WC in her bathroom. She could not have been more vulnerable.

'You put your gloved hand over her mouth to stifle her screams then punched her and slapped her to the chest area.

'When you finally allowed her off the toilet seat you cut off her hair with a pair of scissors. You also cut her landline and took her mobile phone. Such conduct cannot and will not be tolerated.'

Miah, who works at Tesco in Bow, East London, has no previous convictions and had been on the supermarket’s fast-track management programme.

He was married to Mrs Begum for eight years and they had two children, now aged three and seven.

Mathew Dance, defending, said: 'He has indicated genuine remorse. He says he has learned his lesson.

'He wants to put all this behind him and get on with his life.'

Miah, of Whitechapel, pleaded guilty to false imprisonment and assault causing actual bodily harm.

Five Men On Trial In Derby For Urging Execution Of Gays

Five men are to go on trial on Monday accused of stirring up hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation in the first prosecution of its kind.

Ihjaz Ali, 42, Mahboob Hassain, 45, and Umer Javed, 38, first appeared in court last January to face the charges.

Two other men, Razwan Javed, 28, and Kabir Ahmed, 27, were also charged with the same offence.

The charges related to an allegation that the men handed out a leaflet called "The Death Penalty?" outside a mosque in Derby, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.

The leaflet is understood to have called for homosexuals to be executed.

CPS lawyer Sue Hemming said: "The charges relate to the distribution of a leaflet, "The Death Penalty?", outside the Jamia Mosque in Derby in July 2010 and through letterboxes during the same month.

"This is the first ever prosecution for this offence and it is the result of close working between the Crown Prosecution Service and Derbyshire Police."

The men will go on trial at Derby Crown Court today.

Ali, Hassain and Umer Javed are charged with three counts each of an offence of sending letters with intent to cause distress or anxiety under section 1 of the Malicious Communications Act 1988, the CPS said.

Ali is also charged with three offences, contrary to section 5 (b) of the Public Order 1986, in relation to the distribution of leaflets outside the Jamia Mosque.

He faces a further four counts of distributing threatening written material intending to stir up hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation, contrary to section 29C (1) of the Public Order Act 1986.

Hassain and Umer Javed are both also charged with two counts each contrary to section 29C (1) of the Public Order Act 1986.

Razwan Javed and Ahmed are both charged with one count each contrary to section 29C (1) of the Public Order Act 1986.

British MPs Reject Halal Meat at Westminster...

The Palace of Westminster has rejected demands to serve halal meat in its restaurants.

Muslim MPs and peers have been told they cannot have meat slaughtered in line with Islamic tradition because the method – slitting an animal’s throat without first stunning it – is offensive to many of their non-Muslim colleagues.

The stance has infuriated some parliamentarians who have eaten meat in the Palace’s 23 restaurants and cafes, having been assured that it was halal.

Lord Ahmed of Rotherham said: ‘I did feel misled. I think a halal option should be made available.’

In 2010, the Mail on Sunday revealed schools, hospitals and restaurants were serving halal meat to unwitting customers.

Waitrose, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Somerfield and the Co-op all said they stocked meat slaughtered according to Islamic tradition without letting customers know.

Fast-food chains including Domino’s Pizza, Pizza Hut, KFC, Nando’s and Subway are also using halal meat without telling customers, it was revealed.

Members of the Church of England have complained that the spread of halal meat was 'effectively spreading Sharia law' across Britain.

However, a spokesman for the House of Lords and the House of Commons confirmed that it was not served in their restaurants.

Alison Ruoff, a member of the Church of England, said: ‘It’s a bit hypocritical that the Houses of Parliament, which have allowed other people to provide halal food, have ruled it out on their own premises.’

When the meat is slaughtered, Islamic verse is uttered before the animal has its throat slashed.

At Halal slaughterhouses thousands of birds are killed every hour.

A Christian organization in Britain has launched a petition campaign aimed at defending the right of those who for religious, moral or other reasons do not want to eat meat slaughtered according to Islamic law (shari’a).

'Why can't I Skype my friends and relatives abroad from prison?' Whine of Bangladeshi terrorist jailed for plotting to blow up passenger jet

An islamic terrorist who plotted to blow up a passenger jet has complained that he is not allowed to use Skype to make low-cost phone calls from jail.

Rajib Karim, 32, wants to use the system, which offers cheap international calls from phones as well as free video link-ups, to contact friends and family in Bangladesh.

But officials at maximum security HMP Frankland in Durham barred the move saying it would pose a serious security risk.

One source said: ‘This guy planned on killing hundreds of people.

'He is a former British Airways software engineer who knows a lot about computers and telecommunications.

'The last thing he should be given access to is a computer or method of free communication.’

Karim was jailed for 30 years last year after being found guilty of planning a 9/11-style terror attack with former Al Qaeda warlord Anwar al-Awlaki.

The father-of-two claims using a prison payphone costs him too much money.

In a letter written to Inside Time, a newspaper for prisoners, he said: 'The international call rates cost a lot using the prison PIN system and the Skype option looked like a perfect solution.

'The best part was that it was legal and no breach of prison rules as the call was made to a direct number and was not being redirected.

'But when I recently tried making my first call I was told by staff here at HMP Frankland that I am not allowed to make any calls through Skype.'

He said he 'tried to explain' how other prisons in the UK reportedly allow inmates to use the service, but said: "The response was a firm "no" as HMP Frankland is part of the high security estate.'

Karim's complaint has been passed on to the National Offender Management Service (NOMS).

He was imprisoned for 30 years last year after Woolwich Crown Court heard he wanted to use his position at British Airways to plant a bomb on a plane as part of a 'chilling' conspiracy with Anwar Al-Awlaki, a notorious radical preacher associated with Al Qaeda.

U.S.-born Al-Awlaki has previously been linked to a number of high-profile terror plots, and was thought to have inspired the 9/11 bombers.

He was killed by a predator drone last September.

Among numerous plots to bring the airline to its knees, Karim hoped he could exploit industrial action by staff to become a cabin crew member and cause an explosion on a U.S.-bound flight.

He was found guilty of four counts of planning terrorism.

Mr Justice Calvert-Smith recommended that Bangladesh-born Karim be automatically deported after he has completed his sentence.

He told Karim: 'The offences were of the utmost gravity.

'You are and were a committed jihadist who understood his duty to his religion involves fighting and, God-willing, dying and then being rewarded in the afterlife.'

Skype is a video and telephone system used by nearly 700million people worldwide that allows people to speak to each other for free. It also lets users speak face-to-face via an online video conferencing facility.

Users can also buy a personalised phone number giving them very cheap calls - charged at local rates - to anywhere in the world.

In October you had a Star Letter in the Mailbag pages which was a very useful piece of information.

It explained how our families can purchase a local Skype number for us to call out families who are abroad. The international call rates cost a lot using the prison PIN system and the Skype option looked like a perfect solution.

The best part was that it was legal and no breach of prison rules as the call was made to a direct number and was not being redirected.

But when I recently tried making my first call I was told by staff her at HMP Frankland that I am not allowed to make any calls through Skype.

I tried to explain that according to Inside Time it had been allowed in other prisons but the response was a firm 'no' as HMP Frankland is part of the High Security Estate.

I would be eager to know if any of your other readers tried using the Skype method and that their experience was, especially prisoners from the High Security Estate.

Judge gives Bangladeshi student permission to stay in the UK... because he loves cricket

A Bangladeshi student has won the right to remain in the UK - after he declared that his love of cricket proved that he was committed to British life.

And there are now concerns that the controversial ruling could open the floodgates for thousands of foreign students to remain in the UK after completing their college courses.

Abdullah Munawar, 23, who has been studying in London, applied to have his three-year student visa renewed in 2010, but was turned down by the Home Office.

However, the accountancy student appealed that ruling, telling the Upper Tribunal of the Immigration and Asylum Chamber that he deserved to remain in the UK because he played cricket at weekends and had also formed friendships with students and work colleagues.

And in what could become a test case, Judge Susan Pitt ruled that the initial refusal of a visa renewal 'amounted to a disproportionate interference with private life that deserved respect'.

Critics claim that the decision could now pave the way for thousands of the 270,00 foreign students currently in Britain to win the right to remain here - because most can easily claim that they have made friends during their stay.

And that view was backed up by Mr Munawar's own legal advisor.

'Although this court's decision is not binding on other judges, there is a possibility to argue the significant points of this case in other appeals. In other words it is a test case.''There is a strong possibility that we will be able to refer back to this case in the future,' Tamij Uddin told the Telegraph.

The decision was condemned by Immigration Minister Damien Green, who accused the courts of 'gold-plating' human rights legislation at the expense of a burgeoning immigration problem. Government has pledged to slash the number of foreigners entering Britain.

'It is unacceptable that the Human Rights Act is being used to prevent the removal of people with no rightto be in this country , and we are changing immigration rules to stop them being abused,' Mr Green told the Telegraph.

And former Cabinet Minister Lord Tebbit described the ruling as 'absurd' adding: 'It appears to me that judges are making up the law as they go along.'

Lord Tebbit caused a storm of protest in the 1980s when he said immigrants could only claim they had integrated into Britain after passing the 'cricket test' - by supporting English national sides in sporting competitions.

Mr Munawar now hopes to get a job with an accountancy firm and has plans to take part in an arranged marriage after his imam lined up a potential bride.

Honour' crimes rising in UK, says women's group

More than 2,800 so-called honour attacks -- punishments for bringing shame on the family -- were recorded by Britain's police last year, according to figures released on Saturday.

At least 2,823 incidents of "honour-based" violence took place, with the highest number recorded in London, the Iranian and Kurdish Women's Rights Organisation (IKWRO) found.

The figures were compiled from 39 out of the 52 British police forces. The others were unwilling or unable to provide data. Eight areas recorded at least 100 incidents, the figures showed.

The attacks included murder, mutilation, beatings, abduction and acid attacks.

Compared with 2009 figures released by 12 police forces, there was a 47 percent rise in incidents.

The Metropolitan Police (London) recorded 495 attacks; West Midlands (Birmingham) 278; West Yorkshire (Leeds, Bradford) 350; Lancashire (northwst England) 227; Greater Manchester 189.

"This is the first time that a national estimate has been provided in relation to reporting of honour-based violence," the report concluded.

"The number of incidents is significant, particularly when we consider the high levels of abuse that victims suffer before they seek help."

IKWRO director Diana Nammi told the BBC: "The perpetrators will be even considered as a hero within the community because he is the one defending the family and community's honour and reputation."

Honour crimes mostly happen in South Asian, eastern European and Middle Eastern communities, she said.

Honour-based violence is an "organised or collective crime or incident" orchestrated by a family or within a community, she said, adding: "It can be by a relative and sometimes on the order of community members."

Things considered dishonourable include having a boyfriend, being a rape victim, refusing an arranged marriage, being gay and in some cases wearing make-up or inappropriate dress.

IKWRO believes the British government does not have a proper national strategy to deal with honour-based violence.

Though it believes awareness of the issue has increased in recent years, police, teachers, social workers and other professionals "still don't really understand it".

A spokesman for the Home Office interior ministry said: "We are determined to end honour violence and recognise the need for greater consistency on the ground to stop this indefensible practice.

"Our action plan to end violence against women and girls sets out our approach to raise awareness, enhance training for police and prosecutors and better support victims."

Widely-reported honour crimes have shocked Britain, a nation widely deemed to have successfully absorbed immigrant communities and customs.

A principal and his wife have been sacked from a college whose stated aim is to promote multiculturalism because they are white Christians, they claim.

Professor Malory Nye, 47, says he was dismissed from the Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education in Dundee, Scotland, because his race and religion were seen by his superiors as a threat to its core Muslim values.

He says the college’s claims to pursuing multicultural values were a charade and that he was dismissed so he could be replaced by a Muslim.

His wife Isabel Campbell-Nye, 42, alleges she was forced from her position as head of the English language centre because she attracted too many students who were not Muslims or Arabs.

The independent college, whose patron is Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, the Deputy Ruler of Dubai, advertises itself as a research-led institution 'that promotes a greater understanding of different religions and cultures in a multicultural context, for the benefit of the wider community'.

The couple are taking the college to an employment tribunal claiming racial and religious discrimination, and unfair dismissal.

The couple, from Perth, were marched off the college grounds in June and have not been allowed to return since.Mrs Campbell-Nye is also claiming sex discrimination after she was suspended and later dismissed apparently because she is married to Prof Nye.

They claim they were given no reason for their suspensions and were dismissed in November despite no evidence of any wrongdoing.

The couple have also lodged grievances against the chancellor of the College Lord Elder – a Labour peer and close friend of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown - for his handling of what they describe as a ‘sham’ disciplinary process.

Prof Nye and his wife began working at the college eight and four years ago respectively, choosing to marry on the campus last year.

However, they believe their attempts at pushing it in a more cosmopolitan direction angered their superiors. Prof Nye said his suspension came just days after he changed the college’s name from the ‘Al-Maktoum Institute for Arabic and Islamic studies’.

The couple allege that Abubaker Abubaker, the director of operations, and Mirza al-Sayegh, chairman of its board of directors and private secretary to the Sheikh, decided to force them out because they were British, white and Christian.

Prof Nye told the Telegraph: 'It is clear to me that there is collusion between these two individuals that I should be removed from my position on the basis that I am not an Arab and not a Muslim and that the person who has the role of principal should be Arab and/or Muslim.

'Multiculturalism and respect for cultural and religious differences are, I had thought, core values of the college.

'However, I believe that such inclusive multiculturalism no longer fits the particular type of multicultural vision of certain managers and the chairman, that is accepting of different cultures, so long as the majority of students are Muslims and/or Arabs and the ethos is distinctly Islamic.

'My face and lack of Muslim faith no longer fit.'

Mrs Campbell-Nye says Mr Abubaker also wanted her removed from her position because she had attracted too many European and Asian students, who weren't Muslim, to her English course at the college, which receives no public funding.

She said: 'Some are from Arab and other Muslim backgrounds. However, a substantial number are from other parts of the world and other cultures.

'I believe Mr Abubaker does not feel happy with us recruiting students from these backgrounds as it does not fit the particular multicultural vision he has for English language.

'The only times Mr Abubaker has encouraged me to bring in students to English language are when they are Arabs or Muslims.

The two teachers were even married on the college's campus before they were sacked

Despite a waiting list for places on its English language courses, the college closed the department last month, leaving its two remaining tutors redundant at Christmas.'I believe that Mr Abubaker’s discrimination against me, because I am not Muslim, I am not Arab, and I am also a woman – and because I have brought a number of non Muslim/non-Arab students to the college – is a significant reason for my suspension.'

The college, which operates as a charity in partnership with the University of Aberdeen, advertises in its prospectus that 'multiculturalism is at the centre of our vision and structure'.

'Our multicultural ethos is visibly translated and implemented in our day-to-day operation. Our staff and students come from diverse national, cultural and religious backgrounds including Muslims and non-Muslims,' it says.

A spokesman for the college said: 'We can confirm that we have been notified that Employment Tribunal proceedings have been raised in the name of Professor Malory Nye and his wife, Isabel Campbell-Nye.

'The College, an independent, not-for-profit charity, places diversity, religious pluralism and multiculturalism firmly at the core of its Higher Education programmes – and its day-to-day activities,' the spokesman said.

'The Al-Maktoum College will vigorously defend its reputation as a centre of excellence within the higher dducation sector and the good name it has won over the last ten years here in Dundee, nationally and internationally.

'Professor Nye was dismissed from his post as Principal at the College following a period of suspension on full pay and an inquiry conducted by the College Chancellor.

'Contingency plans were put in place to ensure the continued smooth running of the College.

'We are in consultation with our team of legal advisers and, as a result, we are not in a position to discuss the matter further at this stage.'

'Modern day pirate' who clamped 50 motorists with fake badge in reign of terror is jailed for five years

A 'modern day pirate' who illegally clamped drivers and charged them sky-high rates to release their cars has been jailed for five-and-a-half-years.

Ruthless Mohammed Ashraf, of Blackley, blackmailed 50 motorists in Manchester into handing over up to £600 a time through his unlicensed company 'Clamp you!'

The cowboy businessman and his gang would hide around corners in a van and target the vehicles of commuters, shoppers and party-goers driving into the city centre.

One man was even clamped while still sat in his car waiting to pick up his wife.

Dr Stephen Cain, whose car was unlawfully towed while he was at a New Year's Eve party in 2009, signed over his vehicle to Ashraf completely because the fee to get it back exceeded its worth.

The clamper reportedly sold it on for another £450.

Another victim was bullied and harassed by one of Ashraf's cronies until they agreed to pay a release fee of £40.

Ashraf, 31, tricked his victims using a homemade ID badge made from photocopy paper stuck on a bank card.

He also operated a speeding ticket scam, in which he transferred penalties to an innocent driver.

Through his dodgy firm, RemoveAllPoints.com, Ashraf convinced people he could legitimately remove points from their licences.

But after taking their fee, he transferred all the tickets to an innocent man - a former customer of his car hire service.

Innocent Amar Majeed was wrongly named as the man at the wheel of high-performance cars and a motorbike that jumped lights and veered into bus lanes.

Mr Majeed was forced to go to courts across the country - at one point travelling from his Glasgow home to Kent - to protest his innocence.

Ashraf was found found guilty at Manchester Crown Court of five charges of blackmail, two offences of possessing articles for use in fraud, three counts of perverting the course of justice and an offence under the Private Security Industry Act 2001.

He denied all the charges and during the trial defiantly gave V for victory signs to photographers taking his picture.

A taxi driver called Mohammed Ali, 50, called Ashraf 'immoral' after he was clamped and charged £150 by the cowboy despite being legally parked.

Mr Ali said: 'He’s so full of himself

and you can’t trust people like him. He was very threatening to me. He was a big guy and was intimidating.

'He’s harming people and he’s dangerous. The way he speaks and acts - he’s in his own little world. He doesn’t respect anyone else.

'It’s really bad what he’s done to people. It’s against the law and it’s immoral. I would like to ask him, "if someone did that to your family how would you feel?"

'If someone is working 12 hour days to support their family and then someone else comes along and takes their hard earned money from them, it’s wrong and people like him should be put in prison for a long time.'

He’s harming people and he’s dangerous. The way he speaks and acts - he’s in his own little world. He doesn’t respect anyone else apart from himself.

Earlier the court heard Ashraf had enrolled on a course with the Security Industry Authority, which regulates workers such as doormen and clampers.

But he was not given a licence and forged his credentials so he could set up Clamp You! Ltd in 2009, which later became Unauthorised Parking Solutions Ltd.

Any car that was clamped was left with a telephone number stuck on its window. Ashraf would answer and demand a £150 before the car was released, plus further costs of up to £400, not including storage fees.

The conman was often nearby to deal with any queries.

One driver, Oksana Sabadisa, told court she was clamped in the car park of the finance company where she worked. She took a picture of Ashraf’s badge and numberplate to check it was legitimate.

Lauren Youldon had her car towed away from outside flats where she lived.

Police raided Ashraf’s home after suspecting he had been lying to courts to dodge motoring convictions.

Judge Michael Henshell said: 'The facts of this case have demonstrated there is an urgent need for police to scrutinise the activities of car clamping operations in and around the city centre.

'In many instances, people were clamped at wholly unsociable hours - when they contacted police they were told it was a civil matter, as it may well be when clamping is carried out in a proper authorised manner.

'In this case the defendant wasn’t properly authorised and the ID badge shown was utterly bogus. The operation of his businesses was a form of piracy committed on the streets of this city in which cars were held hostage.'

One of Ashraf’s accomplices Mudasir Saeed, 31, of Heald Green, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice. She was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

Illegal immigrant who hacked off neighbour's head with meat cleaver has his sentence CUT by six years

An illegal immigrant who raped a nanny and decapitated his neighbour had his life sentence cut by six years today.

Algerian Mohamed Boudjenane, 49, assaulted the Filipina woman and shaved off her hair before killing Lakhdar Ouyahia, 43, in the belief the two were having an affair.

Boudjenane was captured on CCTV carrying the head of Mr Ouyahia in a plastic bag on a bus to Regents Canal in Maida Vale, West London.

The headless corpse was found wrapped in a duvet two days later at the back of a supermarket near Boudjenane's home in Kilburn, North-West London.

The Algerian showed police where he had thrown the head in a canal and police divers recovered it from the water.

But he claimed he had no memory of hitting Mr Ouyahia with a hammer and hacking off his head with a meat cleaver.

Boudjenane was convicted of murder, two counts of rape and false imprisonment by an Old Bailey jury in 2008.

It also emerged Boudjenane was still claiming dole when he should have been thrown out of the country in 2001.

Judge Christopher Moss QC jailed the Algerian for life, with a minimum term of 22 years.

But the murder conviction was quashed last year after the Court of Appeal ruled the trial judge had misdirected the jury on psychiatric evidence.

When the case was referred back to the Old Bailey in September this year, Boudjenane pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility.

The Recorder of London, Judge Peter Beaumont QC, jailed him for life with a minimum term of 16 years after hearing he suffered from a ‘paranoid and delusional disorder’ at the time of the killing.

He said: ‘Given the extreme nature of the violence perpetrated both before and in carrying out the killing, the protection of the public, and indeed the elimination of risk to the public, is paramount.’

However, the fresh psychiatric evidence meant there should be a ‘substantial reduction’ in the minimum term originally imposed, he added.

The sentence will run concurrently with the 15-year jail term imposed in 2008 for the rape and false imprisonment offences.

Boudjenane met the 42-year-old Filipina nanny at a party a few months before the attack, the Old Bailey heard at the original trial.

She worked in Oxford but on February 3 ran into him outside a newsagents in Kilburn, and reluctantly agreed to go to his flat.

He double locked the front door, tied her up with shoelaces and shaved off her hair, raping her twice.

The court heard Boudjenane threatened to kill her by putting her in a tub of boiling water and also accused her of being a prostitute and having sex with 'the man upstairs' - Mr Ouyahia.

But he let her go the next day after she repeatedly promised to become a Muslim to marry him.

He went to Sainsbury's at around 8pm to buy bleach, Dettol and a mop as he plotted to kill Mr Ouyahia, and was next seen boarding a bus carrying a 'head-shaped' bag on February 5.

The victim's headless body was discovered by a member of the public at the back of Somerfield's supermarket the next day.

Boudjenane fled to Alvaston in Derby to stay with a girlfriend but was arrested on February 7.

Boudjenane admitted he had killed Mr Ouyahia but claimed he could not remember anything about the attack or his movements up until his arrest.

His barrister Orlando Pownall QC asked him: 'Do you accept that you must have taken the head of Mr Ouyahia on the bus and threw it into the canal?' He replied: 'No.'

Mr Pownall asked: 'Who else could it have been if it wasn't you?' and Boudjenane replied: 'I can't remember.'

Mr Pownall asked if he used that cleaver to cut his head off, but Boudjenane said: 'I don't know.'

Judge Moss told him: 'I have no doubt on the evidence that you intended to kill him. Thereafter, you insulted his dead body by mutilation. You decapitated his body and tried to dismember him.

'You disposed of the head and body in an attempt as I find to avoid capture. You are, it seems to me, a very dangerous individual.'

Boudjenane complained of having suicidal thoughts and hearing strange voices - although he didn't know what language they were speaking in.

The psychiatrist at the time decided he did not have any psychiatric illness but he was seen at an outpatients' clinic over the next year.

Baby born to Muslim mother after affair must be adopted to stop honour killing attempts by 'shamed' grandfather

A baby born to a Muslim mother after an affair must be adopted to prevent the child becoming the victim of an honour killing, the Court of Appeal ruled today.

The baby's mother, who is not married, was so 'terrified' of how her family would react that after becoming pregnant she ran away from home.

She then concealed her pregnancy by wearing loose clothes and travelling to the other side of town for her antenatal care.

As soon as the baby - known only as Q - was born the mother gave her up for adoption.

Upholding a High Court decision, three judges ruled that Q's father could not have his daughter to live with him because of the risk the baby's maternal grandfather would track her down.

Instead, Q, who is now a year old, will be adopted.

The baby's maternal grandmother had told police that if her husband found out about the child 'he would consider himself honour-bound to kill the child, the mother, the grandmother herself and the grandmother’s other children'.

Today Lord Justice Munby, Lady Justice Black and Lord Justice Kitchin said in a joint ruling that the child was at risk if she was not adopted.

They said if the grandfather discovered the affair 'it would be a matter of intense almost unimaginable shame to him and his family'.

The couple who are adopting the child had been looking after her since December 2010.

They are also Muslim and from the same country as the mother, but from a different community.

The judges imposed unusually wide reporting restrictions banning the publication of all names and locations linked to the case because of the continuing dangers faced by mother and child.

The baby's father - a married man known as F - had launched an appeal against the decision made by Mrs Justice Parker in the High Court last July.

She found there would be 'a very significant risk of two and two being put together' if the child went to live with its father because the baby was quite obviously not his wife's child.

The appeal court judges ruled: 'In the particular circumstances of this case, the judge rightly regarded the risk of physical harm to Q and M (her mother) as being of major importance.'

The court heard that although both the baby's mother and father were Muslim, there was a 'profound cultural difference' between them.

Upholding Mrs Justice Parker’s decision to make an adoption order, the appeal judges said: 'The mother’s evidence, supported as it was by her actions, and the evidence of (the father) and an experienced police officer, drove the judge to conclude that refusal of the order would carry with it a significant risk of physical harm.

'In our judgment this conclusion cannot be criticised.'

The adopting couple, Mr and Mrs A, were 'loving and devoted adopters to whom Q has formed a deep attachment'.

The couple were Muslims who had taken advice from their imam that they could adopt Q.

The judge had rightly concluded that under Islamic law and tradition 'there would be no long-term harmful consequence in adoption'.

Teenage rapists aged just 16 caught on camera 'elated' after horiffic sex attack on woman, 20

Two teenagers subjected a woman to a terrifying rape ordeal after stalking her and abducting her as she left a nightclub.

Jailat Khan and Shahzada Khan, both just 16, were caught after they were captured on CCTV celebrating their sickening attack in Leeds city centre.

The victim, in her early 20s, was on the phone to her boyfriend asking him to get her a taxi at around 2am when she was dragged into a doorway.

He could hear her screams for 30 seconds before the line went dead. She was then raped.

Shahzada Khan and Jallat Khan were 'looking for an easy target' on the night they raped a woman in Leeds city centre

The pair have now been jailed for the shocking attack.

A court heard the pair, both Afghanis, were prowling the streets on June 12 this year looking for an easy target when they came across their victim.

The defendants spotted the woman and followed her after she left the HiFi club in Leeds, West Yorkshire, and one spoke to her when she stopped at a bus stop while the other was looking around assessing the area.

The pair then struck from either side bundling her into a fire exit doorway.

Jason Pitter, prosecuting, told Leeds Crown Court she was pushed to the ground and when she screamed Shahzada put his hand over her mouth.

She could hear Jailat laughing and tried to struggle but was overpowered. Jailat raped her while his accomplice held her down.

Mr Pitter said: 'While on the mobile phone to her boyfriend, he had the misfortune of hearing the attack begin.

'He heard her become distressed then say ‘Get off, get off, what are you doing’. He heard her scream for 30 seconds before her line went dead.'

The defendants ran off when they were disturbed but Shahzada was then captured on CCTV making a playful bowling motion. The prosecutor said they appeared 'elated' after the attack.

'Those actions do not portray the grave nature of their conduct moments before,' said Mr Pitter.

Two men heard the victim’s distress and went to her assistance. She was hysterical and pleaded with them not to leave her alone saying 'Why has this happened to me? Why have they done this to me?' When the police arrived they found her sitting in the doorway hugging her knees, shaking, crying and muttering.

Jailat Khan, of Beeston, Leeds, was ordered to be detained for five years and Shahzada Khan, of Leeds, was ordered to be detained for four years after both admitted kidnap and rape.

Sentencing the pair on Tuesday, Judge Christopher Batty said they had targeted a vulnerable woman alone in the city centre and the effect on her was 'immeasurable'.

'Not a day passes without her suffering flashbacks and nightmares. She has not been out since these events, her confidence has gone and she is currently taking anti-depressant medication.'

The judge, who lifted a ban on their identities because of the severity of the attack, said: 'I have been to that alleyway and it is a very cold, miserable, frightening place and I can’t even begin to imagine how the complainant felt. It is a very dark and lonely spot.'

He told them had they been adults the sentence would have been longer but he had taken into account their plea sparing the victim a trial and their age.

Stephen Crossley, for Jailat Khan, said he arrived in the UK in 2009 and was given discretionary leave to remain until July next year following the deaths of his father and brother in Afghanistan and loss of contact with his mother and sister in that country.

Neither he nor Shahzada Khan knew their ages and both had been given a statutory birth date of January 1, 1995.

Catherine Silverton, for Shahzada Khan, said he was brought up in Afghanistan, Pakistan and then the UK by a couple he thought were his parents but discovered when he was remanded they were his aunt and uncle, his real parents having died in a car crash when he was young. He had expressed remorse.

She added: 'Nothing I say on the defendant’s behalf is intended to suggest that these offences were anything other than the stuff of nightmares.'

The Khans were identified following an appeal. Jailat Khan’s DNA was found on the woman and while in custody, he was found to have a 'worrying attitude to women' and threatened to rape a member of staff.

After the case Det Supt Paul Taylor said: 'This was an extremely shocking incident and is thankfully something which I have never seen before in my many years as a detective.

'After stalking lone women until they were able to find a victim, they then celebrated their crimes in full view of CCTV cameras. This proved to be their undoing.'

A 22-year-old student was arrested last night at Birmingham Airport on suspicion of carrying with him a terrorist document.

Police seized the Pakistani national - who lives and studies in the UK - after he got off a flight from Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said he was held on suspicion of being in possession of a document likely to be of use to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.

Last night he was being questioned by officers from West Midlands Police's Counter Terrorism Unit.

It's unclear whether police and customs were acting on intelligence or whether the suspect was arrested after a routine customs search.

The suspect is on a student visa studying in the UK.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police told MailOnline: 'A 22-year-old man was arrested last night at Birmingham airport on suspicion of being in possession of a document likely to be of use to a person committing a terrorist offence under section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

'He was questioned by officers from the counter terrorism unit as he arrived on a flight from Dubai.

'He is a Pakistani national with a student visa, studying at a fully accredited institution.'

The spokesman added: 'The suspected document was found in his possession.'

Police would not give any further details in response to questions.

Mrs Chapti, who has six children with her 57-year-old husband, argued in the High Court in Birmingham that the rule was a breach of the couple’s right to a private and family life under the European Convention on Human Rights.

Using legal aid to fight her case, she also argued that it was a breach of the right to marriage, and the right to be free from discrimination.

Yesterday, Mr Justice Beatson ruled that the English language requirement did not amount to a breach of the couple’s human rights and dismissed the case.

He said: ‘The new rule does not indirectly discriminate on the ground of nationality, ethnic origins or disability.’

Mrs Chapti, from Leicester, who speaks only halting English herself, vowed to appeal against the decision.

Through a translator, she said: ‘Naturally I feel very disappointed. It is Christmas and I will be alone without my husband. We will keep fighting for him to come here.’

She said it would be easier for Mr Chapti, a farmer from the Gujarati village of Valan, to learn English in Britain than India. He cannot read, write or speak the language.

She has previously said that he was ‘too old’ to learn English even if he did get leave to stay in Britain.

Mrs Chapti, a machinist in a clothes factory, moved to the UK with her parents six years ago, using a British protected passport issued when they lived in Malawi, which was a UK colony.

Mrs Chapti is believed to have been commuting between India and Leicester for several years.

But under the new immigration rule, her husband was refused a spouse visa.After successfully applying for naturalisation as a British citizen, she attempted to ‘send for’ her husband and their youngest child.

Previously, spouses and partners were required to demonstrate an ability to speak English two years after moving to Britain. Now they must speak a minimum level of English when they arrive.

Mrs Chapti and her husband were one of three couples who challenged the immigration law requiring people to be able to speak English before coming to Britain.

At an earlier court hearing, Mrs Chapti’s lawyer Manjit Gill QC said the rule was a breach of the couple’s human rights.

He said: ‘The rule is particularly striking in that it prevents mere residence even though one of the parties is fully entitled to live in this country.’

He said it discriminated against people on the grounds of nationality and race.

Dominic Raab, a Tory MP spearheading a parliamentary campaign for human rights reform, said learning the language helped newcomers and encouraged ‘integration rather than segregation’.

He said: ‘It’s extremely important that the requirements for newcomers to this country to learn English are upheld and maintained.

‘It is vital for those arriving in this country to be able to get on and for community cohesion.’

Mrs Chapti previously told the BBC: ‘It’s my right to be with my husband and I want to be with him. He is too old to learn English and he lives in a very remote place.

‘It is impossible for him to learn English.’

Academics at Cambridge University have reacted with dismay after being ordered not to shake hands automatically with Muslims or disabled people in case it upsets them.

A directive sent to admissions tutors warns that some applicants are 'culturally sensitive' to traditional greetings and suggests that 'suitable body language' is just as welcoming.

A spokesman for the university said: 'Dons should read the situation properly and bear in mind that not all people will want to shake hands.'

He said the warning related in particular to Muslim women and some people with disabilities.

Some tutors say they have been made to feel like 'social misfits' as a result.

One, who did not want to be named, said: 'It seems to be totally bonkers. We know when to shake someone's hand and when not to.'

'All this seems to be stupid and pointless and could make interviews even more awkward.'

Sally Hunt, the University College Union general secretary, said: 'While I am sure this advice is well-intentioned, academics are grown-ups and are intelligent enough to know when to shake a person's hand or not.'

Cambridge University moved to integrate female Muslim students further in 2009 when it decided to allow them to wear burkas at graduation ceremonies.

By tradition, students are required to wear dark suits and white shirts under their graduation gowns.

The university had clamped down on breaches of the rules after officials complained students were increasingly wearing casual clothes to ceremonies.

But it clarified that clothing linked to religious observance, such as burkas, would still be allowed.

Muslim radical who sold extremist books and DVDs to 7/7 bombers is jailed for three years

An Islamic bookseller has been jailed for three years for distributing extremist material that 'encouraged terrorism' and found its way on to the bookshelves of terrorists including 7/7 bomber Mohammed Sidique Khan.

Islamic studies graduate Ahmed Faraz was convicted of disseminating radical material, including an Al Qaeda training manual, bomb-making instructions and 'disgusting' footage of beheadings, including executed Brit Ken Bigley.

Siddique Khan's wife was found trying to throw away a bag containing books from the store the day after the 7/7 attacks.

The test case is the first significant conviction under new terrorist legislation and involved a lengthy police investigation.

Faraz, 32, sold the books and DVDs from his bookstore, Maktabah, in Sparkhill, Birmingham, and later from a website which got millions of hits worldwide.

He was first arrested in 2007 and closed the bookstore, but reopened it online in 2008. He was later re-arrested.

He claimed during the ten-week trial that the material was for academic research, but the jury convicted him of 11 of 15 counts against him.

The father-of-five had initially faced 30 counts of possessing and distributing extremist material, but the judge directed the jury to return not guilty verdicts for eight counts, as none were sold following the legislation being enforced.

Other counts have been left to lie on file.

Faraz was not accused of being part of a specific plot, but Mr Justice Calvert-Smith said many of the books published by Maktabah found their way on to the bookshelves of terrorists - including 7/7 bomber Khan and Atlantic airlines bomb plotters.

One of the convicted airline plotters was heard quoting from a Muktabah publication - 21st Century Crusades - in his suicide video.

The DVD contained footage of the twin towers attacks and other attacks on U.S. military vehicles

Going through each publication in detail, Mr Justice Calvert-Smith said they 'encouraged terrorism', and provided an 'endorsement of Osama Bin Laden'.

One of the books Faraz was found guilty of disseminating was an edition of Milestones, an important text in the development of Islamist political thinking in the 20th century.

The book, by Sayyid Qutb, is freely available and is studied widely - but a special edition of Milestones sold by Faraz was developed specifically to promote extremist ideology.

It was found on the bookshelf of the Atlantic airline bomb plotters.

Mr Justice Calvert-Smith said at Kingston Crown Court: 'Maktabah was the only known commercial operation selling this wide-ranging "jihadist" literature.

'It's no surprise that your books were found on the shelves of many of those convicted of serious terrorist offences.

'It was grossly irresponsible to publish them in the way they were designed to appeal, not to academics, but to young people, and young people who had recently converted to Islam or become more religiously inclined as they got older.

'These books did glorify terrorism, the killing and injuring of civilians and implied, either by silence or otherwise, approval of such atrocities as the 9/11 or 7/7 attacks.

'How any publisher of books and other media could disseminate this material after 9/11 and, in the case of Milestones, a few months after 7/7 and 21/7 is beyond me.

'I detect no sign of remorse and acceptance from you that you have in fact gone beyond the limits.

'You maintain your insistence in your belief that your conduct was justified and that the laws made to prosecute you bear a resemblance to laws passed in Nazi Germany.'

Friends and family in the public gallery wept as sentence was passed.

Faraz appeared fidgety and nervous, but remained impassive as he was handed the three-year jail term.

Four of the counts related to 'computer files containing useful material to those who would carry out terrorist attacks'. These included an Al Qaeda training manual and bomb-making instructions.

The judge also ordered everything seized by the police during the investigation to be destroyed.

The attackers - three sisters and their cousin - were told by a judge that normally they would have been sent to jail.

However, he handed the girls - all Somalian Muslims - suspended sentences after hearing that they were not used to alcohol because their religion does not allow it.

Their victim was left with a bald patch after they pulled a chunk out of her hair during the attack on the High Street, Leicester.

Ambaro and Hibo Maxamed, both 24, their sister Ayan, 28, and cousin Ifrah Nur, 28, attacked Rhea, a care worker, as she walked to a taxi rank with her boyfriend after a night out.

The victim, a support worker, was left so traumatised that she lost her job following repeated absences with stress and flashbacks, Leciester Crown Court was told.

The charge - assault occasioning actual bodily harm - carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

James Bide-Thomas, prosecuting, said Ambaro Maxamed, who started the violence, had called Miss Page a 'white bitch' during the incident.

The women, who are all Somalian Muslims, were not charged with racial aggravation.

Victim Miss Page said: 'I had gone for a drink after work and then I met my boyfriend for a couple more before heading home.

'We didn't want to stay out too late so we went to get a taxi and all of a sudden I heard these women shouting abuse at me.

'We were just minding our own business but they kept shouting "white bitch" and "white slag" at me.

'When I turned around one of them grabbed my hair - she literally wrapped her fingers in my hair - then threw me on the ground. That's when they started kicking me.

'They were taking turns to kick me in the head and back over and over. I was lying on the ground the whole time, crying and screaming. It was terrifying.

I thought they were going to kill me.

'Eventually the police came but it felt like ages. Afterwards I was covered in blood and hair.

'I had a bald patch on my head where they had yanked my hair out and I was black and blue all over.

'I honestly think they attacked me just because I was white. I can't think of any other reason.'

She suffered bruises and grazes to her head, back, legs and arms, and had clumps of hair pulled out.

Gary Short, mitigating for Ambaro Maxamed, said the attack was down to alcohol.

He said: 'Although Miss Page's partner used violence, it doesn't justify their behaviour.

They're Somalian Muslims and alcohol or drugs isn't something they're used to.'

Seventeen months on from the attack, she is still undergoing counselling and suffers from panic attacks and flashbacks.

The group all admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm and received six month suspended sentences.

Judge Robert Brown told them: 'This was ugly and reflects very badly on all four of you.

'Those who knock someone to the floor and kick them in the head can expect to go inside, but I'm going to suspend the sentence.'

He said he accepted the women may have felt they were the victims of unreasonable force from Rhea's partner Lewis Moore, 23, who tried to defend her from the attack.

As well as the suspended sentence, Hibo Maxamed, who needs dialysis three times a week for a kidney complaint, received a four-month curfew between 9pm and 6am.

The others were ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work.

Rhea said after the hearing: 'It should have been immediate custody after what happened. It's not sending out the right message about street violence.

'They were kicking me in the head right up to the minute the police arrived.

'Even after the police came and they all ran away, one of them came running back to kick me in the head one last time while I was lying unconscious on the ground.'

Rhea, a support worker who helps care for people with autism and learning difficulties, said the sentence was 'disgusting'.

'It's no punishment at all and sends out a message that it's okay to do that to someone,' she said.

'And for them to say they did it because they were not used to alcohol is not an excuse.

If they were not supposed to be drinking then they shouldn't have been out in bars at that time of night.

'The attack has had a devastating affect on my life and they have just been allowed to get away with it.'

British police say 22 people have been arrested outside of the US Embassy in London during a protest over the American use of drones in Pakistan.

Scotland Yard confirmed the arrests on Friday at the demonstration, organised by a group calling itself ”United Ummah.”

Police said 20 people were arrested on suspicion of being members of a group banned by the Home Office. It would not say what group it believed the suspects belong to. One other person was arrested for violent disorder and another for obstruction.

”United Ummah” does not appear on the Home Office’s list of banned groups, but prescribed organisations have rebranded themselves in the past after they were featured.

Married Shahzad Malik, 32, made contact with his victim on SingleMuslim.com and arranged to meet her for coffee in south west London.

When he arrived he announced a change of plan and instead drove her to police accommodation in nearby Brentford.

When she expressed concern his decision, he reassured her and showed her his warrant card, the Independent Police Complaints Commission disclosed.

An investigation was launched when the woman reported the incident to police last January.

Malik, from Datchet, Berkshire, who was based at Hounslow police station, was charged with rape and two sexual offences but criminal proceedings were later dropped when prosecutors offered no evidence.

Rachel Cerfontyne, spokesperson for the IPCC, said: "This was a despicable abuse of a trusted position, which left a vulnerable young woman traumatised.

"She was subjected to assault and violation by a police officer. The officer has rightly been dismissed."

She said he was not a resident at the police section house where he assaulted her and had no permission to take a member of the public into the building.

Commander Peter Spindler, of the Metropolitan Police's directorate of professional standards, said: "This officer was the subject of some very serious allegations and the misconduct hearing, having reviewed the evidence, found that the case against him was proved.

"He abused his status as a constable for his own gratification in a most appalling way. We will not tolerate this type of behaviour, and he has therefore been dismissed from the service for gross misconduct."

A CPS spokesperson said the original charges had been dropped as there was “insufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction.”

A GROUP of Muslim women claim that Hounslow Council is not doing enough for their exercise needs.

They say that due to religious constraints they can not exercise when there is a man about, even if he is the instructor.

They want more women-only facilities in leisure facilities and have complained, in some centres, even the changing rooms are communal.

Councillor Pritam Grewal said: "We current run a significant number of women's sessions across our Leisure Centres. These include swim sessions, gym sessions and classes."

"However, none of the centres guarantee that there will be female only staff working."

He added it was hard to guarantee female only lifeguards, instructors or even changing facilities, but Isleworth Leisure Centre would see if they could expand on their women only swimming sessions.

Susan Hodgson, Hounslow Council's women and girls development officer for sport, said: "Over three years ago Hounslow council identified the need to increase women and girls' increase participation in sports across the borough.

"It is a very ethnically diverse area and for a lot of Muslim women they need to have reassurance that the instructor will definitely be female and there will not be able to be viewed by the public."

She added that on Fridays she offered female only activities such as badminton, zumba and keep-fit from 5.15 to 7.15pm at Cranford Community College in High Street, Cranford.

Nohad Halawi, who worked at Heathrow Airport, is suing her former employers for unfair dismissal, claiming that she and other Christian staff at the airport were victims of systematic harassment because of their religion.

She claims that she was told that she would go to Hell for her religion, that Jews were responsible for the September 11th terror attacks, and that a friend was reduced to tears having been bullied for wearing a cross.

Mrs Halawi, who came to Britain from Lebanon in 1977, worked in the duty-free section as a perfume saleswoman of the airport for 13 years but was dismissed in July.

Her case is being supported by the Christian Legal Centre, who say it raises important legal issues and also questions over whether Muslims and Christians are treated differently by employers.

It comes amid growing concern among some Christians that their faith is being marginalised and follows calls from Lord Carey, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, for Christians to be given greater legal protection in the wake of a series of cases where they have been disciplined or dismissed for practising their faith.

Last week, Arieh Zucker, a Jewish businessman, complained that he has been repeatedly singled out for full-body scans by Muslim security staff at the airport.

The 41-year-old mortgage broker from London has accused them of "race hate" and is threatening to sue for racial discrimination after being made to "feel like a criminal" while being scanned.

Mrs Halawi's case centres on whether she was treated unfairly when she lost her job in World Duty Free in Terminal 3 after she spoke out over what she described as bullying and intimidation by her Muslim colleagues of her and other Christians.

She said that she was the subject of a complaint by an Islamic colleague which was specious and that when she raised her own concerns as a Christian, she was the one who was dismissed.

Now she is distraught at losing her job on allegations made by what she describes as a small group of "extremist" Muslims.

Mrs Halawi, 47, said: "I have been sacked on the basis of unsubstantiated complaints so there is now great fear amongst my former colleagues that the same could happen to them if one of the Muslims turns on them.

"This is supposed to be a Christian country, but the law seems to be on the side of the Muslims."

A mother of two, she says that she had always got on well with her Muslim colleagues and relations between staff of different faiths had been good in the past, but that the atmosphere became increasingly uncomfortable with a growing number of employees espousing "fundamentalist Islam".

She says they harassed Christians at work by making fun of them for wearing crosses, ridiculing Jesus and telling them they would go to Hell if they did not convert to Islam.

"One man brought in the Koran to work and insisted I read it and another brought in Islamic leaflets and handed them out to other employees," she said.

"They said that 9/11 served the Americans right and that they hated the West, but that they had come here because they want to convert people to Islam.

"They say that Jesus is s***** [shitty] and bullied a Christian friend of mine so much for wearing her crosses that she came to me crying."

Mrs Halawi says she was targeted by the fundamentalists after she stood up for her friend, who is 62 and who she is keeping anonymous because she still works at the terminal.

In May, five of her Muslim colleagues complained to David Tunnicliffe, the trading manager at World Duty Free, accusing her of being anti-Islamic following a heated conversation in the store.

The row had stemmed from her description of a Muslim colleague as an allawhi, which means 'man of God' in Arabic. Another Muslim overheard this and thought she said Alawi, which was his branch of Islam.

Following the complaints she was suspended immediately, but was not told the grounds for her suspension until she met Mr Tunnicliffe in July.

Two days after the meeting she received a letter, which said the "store approval" - the Heathrow security pass - needed to work at World Duty Free was being removed because her behaviour was deemed to be unacceptable.

"I believe that the breakdown in relationship between yourself and some of your colleagues has contributed to this situation and has led to a number of inappropriate conversations taking place," the letter said.

"Whilst I do not believe that you may have meant to be offensive, I believe that it was not unreasonable for the individuals who either heard these comments, or who they were directed at to find them offensive, and they are extremely inappropriate."

However, the only comments she made which Mr Tunnicliffe claimed were offensive relate to her accusing a Muslim colleague of having "extremist leaflets" and asking another Muslim why Jesus was being described as "s*****".

She was paid on a freelance basis by Caroline South Associates, a fragrance and cosmetics agency that provides staff to work in World Duty Free, and was told that she would not be able to continue working without her pass.

A petition signed by 28 colleagues, some of them Muslims, argued that she has been dismissed on the basis of "malicious lies", but failed to see her reinstated.

Andrea Minichiello Williams, founder and director of the Christian Legal Centre, said that the case is one of the most serious they have handled.

"It raises huge issues," she said.

"First, there is the level of Islamic fundamentalism prevalent at our main point of entry to the UK.

"Then there are very real issues of religious discrimination, which it would appear those in authority are turning a blind eye to, using the current loop-holes in employment law as an excuse."

The centre has instructed Paul Diamond, a leading human rights barrister, to represent Mrs Halawi in taking both Caroline South Associates and Autogrill Retail UK Limited, which trades as World Duty Free, to an employment tribunal.

They hope that the case will set a precedent for thousands of people like Mrs Halaoui who would appear to be employees from the working relationship, but actually have no rights because of their self-employed status.

A lawyer acting for CSA said: "The case is still pending so the company is not in a position to comment, but as far as the company is concerned she's never been an employee and has never been dismissed."

A spokesman for World Duty Free said they were unable to comment because the matter is subject to "ongoing legal proceedings".

'Paralyzed' Benefits Recipient Dances at Wedding...

A benefits fraudster who claimed he was bed-ridden yet was filmed dancing at a wedding has been jailed.

Mohamed Bouzalim, 37, cheated the authorities out of nearly £400,000, Isleworth Crown Court heard.

He will serve nearly seven years for 11 counts of deception, fraud and assisting illegal entry into the UK.

The court heard he had also falsely claimed asylum saying he was an Afghan who had been tortured by the Taliban when in fact he was from Morocco.

Bouzalim flew into Heathrow airport in June 2001.

He told the authorities he had been tortured, that the Taliban had murdered his father and his mother was dead.

But according to the UK Border Agency (UKBA), he was an illegal migrant from north Africa.

Over the next decade, he used false names, passports, driving licences, and other ID cards to claim almost £400,000 in benefits including money to pay family members to be his full-time carers.

At the height of the scam, he was receiving £66,000 a year tax free and managed to do a masters degree and later study for a PhD at The School of Oriental and African Studies in central London.

Bouzalim pretended he could not walk and was in need of 24-hour care.

He was provided with a specially converted ground floor, two bedroom council flat in Kilburn, north-west London, with wheelchair access.

But during an investigation, Metropolitan Police officers secretly filmed Bouzalim walking unaided from his flat and down the street.

'Top class fraudster'

When they raided the purpose-built property they found a video of him dancing at his wedding in Morocco in 2009.

Robert Coxhead, senior investigating officer from the UKBA Criminal and Financial Investigation team, said: "Mohamed Bouzalim was a top class fraudster and con artist. His whole life was a lie."

The agency added that it was because of the "overwhelming weight of evidence" including the wedding video, that he admitted his crimes.

He received £137,602 from north London's Camden Council to pay for his carers, around £70,000 in housing benefit, £60,000 from the Independent Living Fund, £74,000 in income support and £15,000 disability living allowance.

Instead of his parents being dead, they in fact came to the UK on visitor visas and then allegedly acted as his carers.

They now live in London and claim pension tax credits and housing benefit, totalling about £2,000 a month.

But Bouzalim also owned a property in Leyton, east London, which he rented out for £1,200 a month.

"I think it's outrageous," said Mr Coxhead.

"What's worse about it is there are so many needy people out there who perhaps don't have the access to the benefits they should do and here is a man perfectly able, an intelligent man and he's deceived a number of different organisations."

Bouzalim, who speaks six languages including the Afghan language Pashto, was given exceptional leave to remain when he arrived in the UK in 2001.

He was granted indefinite leave to remain in April 2007 and granted British Citizenship in June 2009.

At Isleworth Crown Court, he admitted 11 counts of deception, fraud and assisting illegal entry into the UK.

Three other family members pleaded guilty to defrauding Camden Council.

Camden Council and the Department for Work and Pensions have both been contacted by BBC London but have not responded regarding the case.

The UKBA says it will now look to deport Mr Bouzalim, who was jailed for six years and 11 months.

Muslim students, including trainee doctors on one of Britain's leading medical courses, are walking out of lectures on evolution claiming it conflicts with creationist ideas established in the Koran.

Professors at University College London have expressed concern over the increasing number of biology students boycotting lectures on Darwinist theory, which form an important part of the syllabus, citing their religion.

Similar to the beliefs expressed by fundamentalist Christians, Muslim opponents to Darwinism maintain that Allah created the world, mankind and all known species in a single act.

Steve Jones emeritus professor of human genetics at university college London has questioned why such students would want to study biology at all when it obviously conflicts with their beliefs.

He told the Sunday Times: 'I had one or two slightly frisky discussions years ago with kids who belonged to fundamentalist Christian churches, now it is Islamic overwhelmingly.

'They don't come [to lectures] or they complain about it or they send notes or emails saying they shouldn't have to learn this stuff.

Earlier this year Usama Hasan, iman of the Masjid al-Tawhid mosque in Leyton, received death threats for suggesting that Darwinism and Islam might be compatible.

Sources within the group Muslims4UK partly blame the growing popularity of creationist beliefs within Islam on Turkish author Harun Yahya who, influenced by the success of Christian creationists in America, has written several books denouncing Darwinist theory.

Yahya associates Dawinism with Nazism and his books are and videos are available at many Islamic bookshops in the UK and regularly feature on Islamic television channels.

Speakers regularly tour Britain lecturing on Yahya's beliefs.

One such lecture was given at UCL in 2008 and this year's talks have been given in London, Manchester, Leeds, Dundee and Glasgow.

Evolutionary Biologist and former Oxford Professor Richard Dawkins has expressed his concern at the number of students, consisting almost entirely of Muslims, who do not attend or walk out of lectures.

Driver Mohammed Javed, 45, ‘used his taxi as a weapon’, driving it straight at passenger Huw Lloyd in an argument over a fare, a court heard.

The impact knocked Mr Lloyd on to the bonnet and he clung on desperately before he was thrown to the ground, suffering head injuries and a broken hand.

Moments earlier, the driver had been arguing with Mr Lloyd and his friend Polly Nicalaous about the fare for a short journey across Bristol after a night out.

The drama unfolded at 3am on April 25 after the pair had asked Javed if he could take them to nearby Stoke’s Croft for £7.

The driver said he would charge according to the meter and they got in, the court heard.

When the meter reached £6 they asked to be let out but Javed kept driving.

They threatened to call the police unless he stopped, but he kept going, before pulling over in Stoke’s Croft where the meter showed £8, Bristol Crown Court heard.

The passengers told him they would only pay £5 because they had asked him to stop.

Eric Waley, prosecuting, said: ‘Javed got out of his taxi, seemed to put his arm out to stop them leaving and is seen to throw a punch at Mr Lloyd who seems to block it.

'The defendant ran back to his car. Mr Lloyd returned to take a photo on his BlackBerry.

‘A black cloud of dust can be seen from the wheels spinning where he [Javed] clearly has his foot down on the accelerator.

Javed, of Bristol, admitted dangerous driving and assault causing actual bodily harm.

He was jailed for six months and banned from driving for two years. Recorder Simon Foster told him: ‘It is extraordinary that there was not more injuries caused.’

UK Finally Acts to Protect Teens from Muslim Sex Gangs...

The Government has finally answered the call to protect vulnerable children in danger of sexual exploitation.

It will, this week, publish a National Action Plan designed to make the issue a 'top priority' for every local authority.

The news comes amid a devastating report into the failures of police and care agencies to protect teenage girls who have been groomed, raped and sold by male gangs, most of whom are Asian.

The mother of one teenager from Leeds, who attempted suicide after a gang rape, said her daughter was the victim of a 'broken system.'

'Everyone failed her,' she told The Times. 'There was no sharing of information.

'They (police) had the names and knew where they (abusers) worked yet the men who did this have never once been arrested or spoken to by the police.'

West Yorkshire Police vowed to look again at the case to see if 'there is evidence that can help bring evil men to book'.

Children's charity Barnardos has been calling on the Government to take action on child exploitation since January with its Cut Them Free campaign.

Other caregivers have also suggested that political sensitivities are to blame for a near paralysis of the systems designed to keep children safe.

JOSIE'S STORY

Like most little girls, Josie lived for horses. She had an exemplary school record with 100 per cent attendance rate.

But at 13, the teen from Keighley, West Yorkshire, was given a laptop and quickly became addicted to Facebook.

Her father was then warned his daughter was spending a lot of time with older Asian men.

One even told the father he would 'slit his throat' when he answered the phone to him.

From there it got worse. Josie started disappearing overnight and began drinking.

Yet, when her father locked his daughter in her room to protect her, it was he who got into trouble with the police for false imprisonment.

He told The Times he has since collected every scrap of evidence to prove his daughter is being sexually exploited by gangs.

'The police kept saying that they're waiting until Josie realises it's wrong,' he said.

'Is that really the best they can do?

CHARLOTTE'S STORY

When the father of 14-year-old Charlotte looked at his daughter's Facebook profile, he discovered 'loads of male, Asian friends.'

Concerned, he started to restrict his daughter's activities. The teen from Keighley, West Yorkshire, then went to live with her mother.

He tracked down all the names and addresses of her friends he believed were involved and passed them on to police.

Meanwhile her school was reporting Charlotte had begun arriving looking 'dirty and extremely thin'.

She was going missing for days at a time, according to agency notes.

By October last year she 'admitted she has slept with different Asian males.'

The police told Charlotte's father they hoped to take action against the men.

That was 17 months ago and he is still waiting.

'There's no will to deal with this issue in Keighley' he said.

'What chance have these kids got if that's the attitude of the police?'

There is a culture 'which assumes that once a girl gets to 14 she's beyond hope of intervention - it's too late,' a source told The Times.

Police and care agencies often say that they cannot take action against suspects without the victim's co-operation.

However, a 2008 protocol established by the force and West Yorkshire's five local authorities states: 'Adults involved in child sexual exploitation... should be treated as child sex abusers and subjected to the full rigour of the criminal law.'

NICOLA'S STORY

Nicola is the only case in six who was groomed by a gang of white men.

The abuse began when she was 12 after a visit to Leeds from her family home in Bradford.

Nicola had thought they were 'really nice people' but by 13 she was doing drugs - 'everything but heroin'.

She was raped twice. The first time she was 'drugged up to the eyeballs' and remembers being dragged into a bedroom and gang raped.

Afterwards her mother took Nicola to the police station, only to be told that 'we don't deal with that here'.

In desperation Nicola's mother took her daughter to New Zealand and away from the gang.

She let her return four months later.

Nicola did return to her old haunts but discovered it wasn't really what she wanted.

'I used to think it was so exciting,' she told The Times. 'But after New Zealand, it was like seeing them with another pair of eyes.'

She hasn't been back since.

Children's minister, Tim Loughton, suggested two weeks ago that the plan will call on councils to act with a 'much greater urgency' to identify victims of sexual exploitation while taking 'robust action against those who commit these appalling crimes.'

As well as the gang rape case of the girl in Leeds, five new cases have been highlighted by The Times' investigation.

No one has been prosecuted for sex exploitation in any of them. Only one of the girls in the six cases had been in care.

One was groomed by white students, but in all the other cases, the perpetrators were Asian, mostly of Pakistani origin.

This pattern of abuse at the hands of male Asian gangs in the West Yorkshire area has been highlighted before, but never formally acknowledged.

In January the Asian ringleaders of a gang in Derby, who brought a ‘reign of terror’ to a city’s streets, targeting and grooming young girls for horrific sexual abuse, were jailed.

Abid Saddique and Mohammed Liaqat were told they would serve a minimum of 11 years and eight years respectively before they could be considered for release.

A DfE spokesman refused to reveal the contents of the National Action Plan but said: 'We are publishing an action plan this week and that will draw on work around the country to prevent sexual exploitation, identify those at risk and support victims.

'It will address the challenge of securing prosecutions and the need for robust action against perpetrators.

'Child sexual exploitation is an appalling form of child abuse and we are determined to do everything possible to stamp it out. '
