ANTI-terror chiefs were jubilant last night as Britain slapped a ban on any more Guantanamo Bay inmates being sent here.
Foreign Secretary David Miliband slammed the door shut as two more head our way to join the 13 from the US detention camp already in the UK.
He said as new US President Barack Obama prepares to shut the former Camp X-Ray: “We feel that is already a significant contribution.”
MI5 and Special Branch had faced a security nightmare if more of the terror suspects arrived. Top brass had warned they could not keep tabs on the ex-inmates since they had never been charged with any offence.
President Obama — who has made the closure of Guantanamo Bay a priority — had counted on Britain and other EU states to take more. But Mr Miliband last night hung out the “closed” sign — insisting to EU counterparts in Brussels the UK had met its obligations and was full.
He told his fellow foreign ministers: “We’re happy to offer our experience to other European countries, as they think about what steps they want to make to help in the closure of Guantanamo Bay.”
