Muslim inmates double in highest security jails

Islamic terrorists and other Muslim prisoners at one of Britain's highest security jails have almost doubled in number in the past two years, according to new figures.

The population of Muslim inmates at Whitemoor prison in Cambridgeshire has risen from 73 in 2006 to 140 last year - representing around a third of all prisoners.
The statistics are revealed after reports that Muslim gangs were being left by staff to "police themselves" at the jail. Staff did not know how to "challenge inappropriate behaviour", prison inspectors said.

MP Malcolm Moss, whose North East Cambs constituency includes the prison, has demanded an urgent Commons debate into the situation.
Mr Moss said: "It is placing a disproportionate and unreasonable burden on prison officers and staff at Whitemoor. This is easily the highest percentage of Muslim prisoners in any British jail.
"Inside Whitemoor it is one of the issues prison officers and staff feel most strongly about."
The Tory MP added: "There are difficulties and problems with having Muslim prisoners. I want to know why a prison in the middle of a mainly agricultural part of the country is taking such a high proportion of Muslims."

Mr Moss said prison officers were not properly trained to handle such large number of Muslims and there were "nuance involved with dealing with Muslim prisoners that prison staff can fail to pick up".
