British man 'told mistress to punish crying baby by dunking her in water bucket... and then watched on Skype as the child drowned'

A British man is facing extradition to Norway over allegations he told his  former mistress to dunk her baby into water while he watched over the internet.

Ammaz Qureshi is accused of instructing Yasmin Chaudhry to put her child in the bucket as a punishment after the one-year-old interrupted their conversation on Skype by crying.

When Chaudhry, in Norway, realised the child, called Hunaina, wasn't breathing she called for help - telling doctors that she fell into the water by accident.

The girl was unconscious when Norweigan paramedics arrived and was pronounced dead the next day, in October 2010.

Chaudhry was initially arrested on suspicion of negligence because of inconsistencies in the stories she gave to police and the paramedics, but is now facing a preliminary charge of murder.

Chaudhry was arrested a few days later and Norwegian police flew to the UK to question Qureshi in December after he was blamed for the death.

He has now been arrested on charges of unlawful killing and is understood to have admitted watching the killing but denies giving any instructions.

Qureshi, 33, managed to keep the killing from his wife until police began to question him.

 

Scotland Yard arrested Qureshi, an accountant, in June on orders from Norway who want to put on him trial.

He is currently in custody in London pending an hearing about his extradition.

Qureshi, from Pinner, North London, is not the father of Hunaina.

The baby's father now lives in Pakistan after splitting with the mother, and was said to have been 'very shocked' by what had happened.

In January this year, Norwegian police prosecutor Kristin Rusdal told MailOnline: 'This has been a long investigation and she (Chaudhry) eventually admitted it to us in October 2011.

'She said it was done to discipline the child. She had been holding her under water. 

'She had discussed the discipline with this friend, with whom she had a relationship.'

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said Qureshi had been remanded into custody following a hearing at Westminster Magistrates Court on June 7.

He added that a further hearing would be held concerning his extradition on July 20.
