Meeting follows release by ISIL of video in which the Islamist militant known as 'Jihadi John' beheads American aid worker Peter Kassig
David Cameron has called an emergency Cobra meeting following the beheading of an American aid worker.
In the video of the murder released by Isil, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, the Islamist militant known as "Jihadi John" threatens to bring slaughter to the streets of Britain.
Following the release of the video, which also dismisses Mr Cameron as a puppet of US President Barack Obama, the Prime Minister will gather together ministers and experts for an in-depth briefing on the issue.
Mr Cameron has already been briefed on the ongoing situation by security officials while at the G20 summit in Australia.
The Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman said: "The Prime Minister will chair a meeting of Cobra following the most recent murders perpetrated by Isil, news of which broke over the weekend. Chairing the cobra will give him the chance to get the very latest from intelligence and security officials.
The video, featuring masked militants, contains the most explicit threats of attacks on the streets of Britain and America.
The graphic footage shows the severed head of Abdul Rahman Kassig, also known as Peter Kassig, a US Special Forces soldier turned aid worker, and the beheading of at least 18 Syrian military prisoners.
Mr Cameron has condemned the “depravity” of the militants. He said Mr Kassig was a “selfless humanitarian worker who had gone to the region to help care for those fleeing the Syrian conflict.”
Mr Obama said that the murder of Mr Kassig was an act of pure evil.
