A man has appeared in court charged with threatening to behead a Ukip election candidate.
Aftab Ahmed, 45, is accused of making the threat to kill David Robinson-Young on the phone during a conversation about the Middle East.
Ahmed, of Winchcombe Place, Heaton, appeared at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court dressed in a suit and shirt and spoke only to confirm his name and address.

Ahmed was granted conditional bail and will go on trial in July.
Mr Robinson-Young, 62, is standing as a candidate in the constituency of Newcastle East.
Speaking to The Newcastle Chronicle, he said he would not let the alleged incident ‘put me off carrying out what I see as my duty to the people of Newcastle upon Tyne East’.

He added: ‘The response I have been getting on the doorsteps I have visited has been overwhelmingly supportive.
‘I am a discrimination lawyer, I have strong links to various ethnic communities and I have represented victims of discrimination all over the country.’
Describing his stance on immigration, Mr Robinson-Young said it was not immigrants that were causing a problem but the ‘politically-motivated immigration system’ force on us by the EU.
