Banned preacher Zakir Nail's pamphlets were available at an events at Durham University
Undergraduates at Durham University’s “Discover Islam Week” were shocked to see the banned writings of Zakir Naik on display outside the library.
Copies of the extremist cleric’s 'Answers to Non-Muslims’ Common Questions About Islam’ were available at the event hosted by the university’s Islamic Society.
A passage in the booklet says: “Every Muslim should be a terrorist to anti-social elements in society.”
It also claims women should wear hijabs to “prevent them from being molested” and says Western culture has turned women into “concubines, mistresses, and social butterflies who are mere tools in the hands of pleasure seekers”.
Students Martha Muir and Sabrina Steuer wrote to the Durham University Islamic Society to complain after being handed copies of the inflammatory booklet.
They said: “Considering the hateful things this man has said and the fact he is literally barred from entering the country we find it highly problematic that your society chose to spread this pamphlet.
“Furthermore, this was just one of the many of his pamphlets being offered on your stand.”
Hate preacher Zakir Naik is banned from entering the UK
Naik is an Indian Islamic preacher and has been banned from entering the UK and Canada because of his radical talks.
His Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) was banned from India to “safeguard national security”.
He was also a supporter of Osama Bin Laden and once said: “If he is terrorising America, the biggest terrorist, I am with him.
“Every Muslim should be a terrorist. The thing is that if he is terrorising a terrorist, he is following Islam.”
The event was hosted by Durham University's Islamic Society
Durham Islamic Society President Mohammed Alatiyyah said: “DUISOC is very sorry if anyone was upset or offended by the booklet, which doesn’t represent the views of our society and was distributed by honest mistake.
“We very much regret that they were displayed. These views in no way represent the views of our society, and they are not views that we want to spread or promote.”
