Kebab shop supplier who used cement mixer to process meat jailed and fined £50,000

A kebab shop supplier who used a cement mixer to process meat has been jailed for four months and ordered to pay more than £50,000.

Sukru Ahmet, 60, was caught with six tonnes of poultry that was deemed unfit for human consumption. Commuters face chaos this week with massive strikes on tube and rail The case was described by investigators from Sevenoaks District Council as ‘one of the most serious breaches of food safety laws’ it had ever seen.

A judge fined the company, UK Chicken Doner and Poultry Ltd, £30,000, ordered it to pay £23,760 in prosecution costs, and jailed Ahmet for four months.

The council was also granted a Prohibition Order that bans Ahmet from managing a food business in the future.

Images showing pallets of raw meat and the cement machine, which had been tweaked so it could be used to mix meat together, have now been released.

The meat, which was stored in the company’s industrial unit in Swanley, Kent, also had considerable freezer burn.

Matthew Dickins, the district council’s cabinet member for Direct and Trading Services, said: ‘This is one of the most serious breaches of food safety laws the council has ever come across.

‘Consumers must have confidence that their meat is prepared in a safe, approved environment and is fit for them to eat.

‘Mr Sukru Ahmet and his company had no regard for the food safety laws that exist to protect the public.

‘The substantial fine and custodial sentence handed down by the court demonstrates the seriousness of the case.’

Ahmet and the company itself had admitted 21 offences of contravening or failing to comply with EU provision for food safety and hygiene regulations.
